mount throttle body... backwards??
This may be crazy, but im contemplating an efi swap from my carb. I have a huge cowl hood and was just gathering some info and plus ive never heard of this before. Can a throttle body possibly be mounted backwards so i can run a pipe and fab an intake to sit at the back of the cowl near the windshield?

Anything is possible...
before i settled on ITB's i was going to weld one of these to the top of my plenum facing backwards and mount my TB to it, then block off the original hole.

I had a whole intake setup using a 4th gen K&N filter all drawn up to make use of my 4" cowl...

That's actually a good plan. It will cause no real issues. The FIRST TPI setup actually has the option for mounting it angled on the drivers side of the plenum, this would be a better location than forward or side mounted.

Alrighty, sounds like a plan. I appreciate it guys!
As you can see the cowl is about 4 inches past the rest of the hood and about maybe 1' and 1/2 wide. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make the airbox for the filter?
Oh and one more question. After the efi swap, do you think the sound of the car will change much? Honestly, i think my car sounds absolutely amazingly perfect. Its got the old muscle car sound. But its time to leave the carb behind. Plus should get better fuel economy with the t56 than the carb.

I am thinking the distrib would be in the way if your talking about TPI.

Re: mount throttle body... backwards??
Im sorta confused. Ive read the stickies and seen the DYI efi manifolds and they all look like the old fashioned carb manifolds, but with fuel injector slots. Wouldnt i just put the elbow there and put the throttle body there? Ive seen the tpi setups and they look much different than those intakes, is there any performance difference? Everyone is telling me that a stock tpi would absolutley choke my 383.

Why don't you check with Classic Industries . They sell a kit that has a fuel injection unit that looks like a holley carb and is made for swapping from carb to fuel injection . The kits come in varies sizes to accomadated most engines . The unit looks just like a carb and has four injectors . The units range in prices from $2,165.99 - $2695.99 for the single quad units . The name of it is the Boss EFI Single Quad .

Re: mount throttle body... backwards??
Mine would have been quite a bit different since i've got a large plenum, that neck was going to get welded to the top of it.
When i replied i was thinking that you would be using the stock TPI upper intake, you are correct that it's not a good combo for a 383.
I'd think something like the Edelbrock Victor EFI would work decently with some kind of throttle body adapter.

Re: mount throttle body... backwards??
This is just getting to complicated.. lol. Ive made my mind up. Ill just get a better intake manifold, get a holley carb, and get the digital 6al2 box so i can tune it with a laptop. Thats really the most i can afford. Its not worth spending so much money, for virtually no performance gain over a decently tuned carb.
