Oil pressure safety switch

I noticed thain the wiring schematics they show an oil pressure safety switch. I was wondering if someone could tell me where it is and how would go about checking it .

Re: Oil pressure safety switch

Depending on the year you're probably talking about the Oil Pressure Sending Unit (OPSU) it's by the oil filter. I think on some of the early years there was a oil pressure fuel pump switch and the oil pressure sending unit for the gauge seperately. It's basically an extra check if the fuel pump relay loses power/dies and the motor still has oil pressure that switch will override the relay and keep the pump going.

Is NOT a safety switch , will not stop engine if oil pressure drops.
As noted above , is there to power the fuel pump should the pump relay fail
Is wired in parallel with pump relay and closes above 4 psi oil pressure
As you don't state what year you have; it could be a seperate switch ( 2 wires ) or included in the combo switch that does the oil pressure gauge as well ( 3 wires ) as shown

Re: Oil pressure safety switch

As for testing it, from everything I've read it can fail in two ways. First it sticks opens (meaning it will think the motor has oil pressure all the time) and will drain the battery running the fuel pump or the 2nd it will fail closed so it will not override and keep the fuel pump running and will leave you stranded if your relay fails while you're driving the car.

Disconnecting the fuel pump relay when car running is one way to find out if OP switch is working( On )
If pump stops when engine stops ( no oil pressure ) then it is working correctly ( Off )

Re: Oil pressure safety switch

on the older cars they're mounted on top behind the intake like in the pic above, on the newer cars they're mounted on the block just above the oil filter much easier to get at.
