my 1986 iroc 305 tpi starts but i have to keep foot on the gas to keep it running. the distributor is a little loose but the cap is tight and the wires all look good. maybe dirty injectors or fuel censor? any ideas on why i cant keep my car running i would greatly apreciate it

 

Have you done the obvious? Check and extract codes. Once thats done and that does not prove helpful, see if its a fuel problem.

 

no i havnt. i got the car 2 days ago. it drives fine on the highway it just dies when i let off the gas. and it wont idle. im getting a diagnostocs run today and im going to check all the codes. im leaning towards dirty injectors. my cousin has a 88 rs and his did the same thing but his was the fuel pump. but idk ill keep messing with it

 

Yep mine had weird idle issues as well. Probably a bit more rough then most but here is a video of it.

yea mine basically is doin that. was you able to drive yours at all though? cuz i can drive mine but i let off the gas and just coast it will die. but i keep revving it in idle it stays running. kinda pulsates every now n then. hopefully i can get it all checked out today or tomorrow cuz i dont realy know how to check all these things on these cars. lol

 

At first? Yea it would rev fine and hold rpm steady, after a few weeks it wouldn't even start anymore even with starting fluid.

 

oh ok. cuz mine starts up fine. it has new exhaust n spark plugs. it just wont stay running. but it starts every time i crank it. i just have to hit the gas and keep the gas pushed down for it to stay running

 

have you checked ohm on the injectors? Should not be less than 12 and that is being generous.

 

i have a mechanic looking at it right now. he adjusted all the spark plug wires but in the process the car flooded out. lol. but if we can get it started were going to adjust the timing and see if this solves the problem. the mechanic said its not the injectors or fuel pump. so we will see here shortly.

 

What do you mean by "the distributor is a little loose", you can't troubleshoot it that way, set the timing to spec and tighten the distributor. then check the easy stuff, fuel pressure, tps, iac, vacuum leaks etc. Also ohm test the injectors they all should be around 12 - 16 ohms

 

i mean its loose. not to bad but i can move it with my hand. im getting the timing and the distributor tightened up tomorrow morning. the plugs are all in order and the car is turning over but now it wont start. the injectors and all that are good. we just think its a bad connection because some jackass didnt put the distributor on right nor the plug wires. i got most of it checked and fixed and everything seems to be in the right place except the distributor problem. i dont have the tool to fix that right now so im waiting until tomorrow morning

 

ok well i figured out the problem. the wires was right but in the wrong starting order. so its back to starting but wont idle. the problems is the timing is way off and the distributor is to loose. the check engine light comes on when its running then it goes away then flashes back on. the mechanic i talked to told me it was just the timing and the wires dont match the car. im getting the wires shortly and the car should be fixed within a week. thanx for yalls help. sorry if it was dumb questions. lol im only 20 and dont know how to work on these cars that good yet.
