I officially start my build today. I have a 92 camaro B4C that the tranny(auto) and engine are shot. So Im gonna pull the 350 and tranny out and replace it with 383 with T5 VSS. Im gonna crate up the original motor and tranny just to keep numbers matching in the event this car is worth anything years down the road.
During my project Im gonna take plenty of pics and ask for suggestions along the way. This is my first major rebuild. Im not doing it alone my buddy Shrek,who owns a 89 firebird 350 carb 700r4, will be assisting me on this.
So here is the rough draft: will be done in 3 stages due to time and cash flow.
Stage 1
-take 350 to machine shop, prep for 383 stroker kit.
-junkyard/classified hunting for T5 VSS(91-92 donor car)
-remove heads, intake, runners, plenum, tb, cam, pulleys, and everthingelse needed off of original motor.
-heads get new valve job and honed
-install new pistons, crank, etc from stroker kit.
-install the rest of the engine parts from original motor
-connect T5 and bellhousing to 383
-pull original motor and tranny
-add the master cylinder for tranny to the fire wall
-install new pedals
-cut the tranny tunnel for the shifter
-install new motor and tranny
-install hooker long tubes and redo cat back
-tune and dailey drive
Stage 2
-new cam from comp cam, like the energy HR264
-new runners from TPiS
-port and hone of plenum and intake manifold
-58mm TB
-MSD everthing
-36lbs injectors
-new heads(not sure which ones)
-larger brakes
Stage 3
-new dash(hardest part to find)
-new carpet
-reupholster leather seats
-audio
-body work
-paint(metalic gun metal pearl)
-silver coat my stock Z28 16" wheels
-blacked out tailights
-HID headlamps

58mm TB is really a waste of money. Look for a ported stock on to 52mm at most. The 58 makes it to touchy daily driving. I wish I had went this route.
Leave your stock heads alone if they are working well. Save the money rebuilding them to put towards the new heads. I suggest RHS, AFR, or Darts.
That cam is small for a 383. Im running the Xtreme energy 270 on my 383 and it is much to small.
You might add a better intake to stage 2 or 3 as well. the HSR is an incredible intake if ported well.
Whats the end power goal? 36lb injectors are pretty big. I made 400rwhp on 32s and could have done it on 30s no problem.

so no go on the 58mm, in regards to the cam i was looking to keep a lil bit of fuel milage. how is your mileage on your setup?
i have heard really good things about the dart heads. that is what i am leaning to more. the reason i was thinking 36lb injectors so i dont have go bigger later. but might rethink it if ur having no issues at 400hp on 32lb. do you know what the stock injectors are on the l98?

Daily driven my 406rwhp vette with 15-17 mpg and a heavier foot and 700r4.
I got the 32lbers and they should see me thru to my next build where im shooting for a 6500rpm redline 450rwhp and a FAT curve cam for autox & roadracing

In that case. Sway bars, badass springs n shocks or coilovers, BRAKES, another set of rims with some hoosiers (A6 for autox and R6 for roadracing), and a good driverseat.
Autox is hard with these widecars and limited traction but roadracing is great for a healthy powerban.

Thats another thing you should do jeremy. get those splayed caps and then take em to machine shop with block and talk to them about what you are tryin to do so yall are on the same page. They can tell you what parts they are better working with and what not. It should cost that much to get splayed caps and tap the block for it. The splayed caps are actually stronger than a stock 4 bolt because on the splayed caps, the outter bolts go in at an angle. But anyways, cant wait to see this go down. I live down the street from jeremy and I have an 89 firebird with a mild 355 and a beefed up 700r which is fun to drive whenever I get the chance too!
I am looking for T5 with not much luck. But during my searcing I have been reading that a T5 is not strong enough to handle a stock 350. so that puts a kink in my original plans. What routes can i take to strengthen the T5? or should i look at going with another tranny like a t56? i really like to goto manual not auto.
6 speed out of a 4th gen or a vette. Or go old school and get a 4 gear muncie.

Have resumed the hope of getting my baby running again though. I have begun the pain staking process of finding an affordable but good condition(running) 350 sbc. For the time being I plan on driving my car completely stock minus my exhaust and tranny.
As for the tranny I have already found a shop that will rebuild the 700r4 with corvette servos, kolene steel plates, larger power bands, new gears, new torque convertor, with a 2 year warranty for $600.
I almost bought an 88 iroc 350, with fuel issues, for a parts car this past week but someone got it before I could. So the search continues
