distributor question

distributor question

i have a 87 iroc 350 and i just put the motor in my car and i was wondering do i just put the distributor in and put the wires on and match the firiing order or do i have to spin it or what some one told me to put a rag in the number one cyl and turn the motor over until the rag comes out and where ever the rotor on the distributor is pointing thats were i put the number one wire im just confused and i cant do nothing until i mess wit this

Correct.
Rotor MUST be pointing at #1 cylinder wire on dist cap when #1 cylinder is TDC on the compression stroke.
Bump , don't crank engine over until rag / paper blows out then check timing mark on balancer .
If you have gone too far may have to hand wind engine back a little to line up marks.
Then fit dist so rotor points to # 1 cyl
Or if you are lazy and already have the dist installed fit wires so #1 wire is where rotor is pointing @TDC
