Engine running rough and won't stay on... HELP

Okay guys here's the short version.... 1987 Trans Am GTA

Changed out the water pump.
Left the MAF in place while doing all the work.
Put everything back together and the motor won't stay running. Determined it was the maf sensor.
Pulled the MAF and the motor runs but at a lower rpm with no "check engine" light.

Now, question.... since the car is running fine with the maf unplugged, can I leave it that way or do I REALLY need to replace it ?

Any thoughts on this.....

Well what the car does is when it detect the MAF sensor is dead the ECM will just run off pre programmed values instead of BS data from the MAF sensor that should be close enough for the car to run. It will run without it but it wont run particularly good and it should be replaced.
