What's the budget? You say you've got exhaust, care to be more specific?

Re: Help me beat my dad at the strip...

to get anywhere near the 12s your gonna have to spend a good amount of money personally your best bet is nitrous i mean a 12 second car on motor is better then a 12 second car on nitrous but its alot more money to do it that way. with a good set of gears, heads, cam, intake, headers, exhaust you should be able to be close

Re: Help me beat my dad at the strip...

THE HEADS! THEY HAVE TO GO! the stock ones are junk, the heads are what the real bottleneck of the TPIs problem with power. Not only on a restricted intake. Get a nice hot cam, different heads, FULL msd system on the car, high flow base intake and runners, headers and any tune you can get. You should be close there. TPIs on a budget ive only seen run a best of 13.9s 13.8s. Gears wont help you much, keep it middle or low gears i wouldnt run anything above 3:73s, gears dont help much anyway since you gonna run out of breathe in 4 grand range anyway unless you get some serious head and intake work to reach over in the 5 grand area.

Sorry on my exhaust stock manifolds back to a knock off flow master still has the cat on it I have no emissions to pass took off the smog pump and air I would like to stay tpi or at least stealth ram on the in take and I don't know what realistic on a budget anything over 1000$ won't work for a winter build but let me know I can start buying the parts I need and eventually build a motor to race him

Nitrous is the only way you'll come close to your goal for under $1000.
TPI is expensive and it's an obstacle. A stealth ram or carb would be a quick and dirty solution, but that's going to eat half your budget. If you're serious about your goal, you might be able to come up with a used carb/intake, get some headers, a cam, maybe a good torque converter, and some sticky tires. You'd probably still be short of your goal, but that's about as far as you're going to get for around $1000.

Re: Help me beat my dad at the strip...

A set of Dyno Don's Headers, Magna Flow 3in Cat back system, 2800 stall converter, cut out the bottoms of the air filter box, change the spark plugs rotor cap and wires, change the oil to Royal Purple, run without air filters at the track only, borrow some slicks and take out all of the interior for less weight. Now you may have a chance to run 13.7- 13.5 @ 100mph.

Re: Help me beat my dad at the strip...

13.7 should be easier to reach. In stock form a 87 L98 car should run somewhere around a 14.7. Keeping with the budget, a $800 set of headers, or a $600 intake isn't a great investment. Heads are out of the question too. A cam with stock heads means either machine work or a really small cam. I'd probably just leave the engine alone.

I'd be looking for a cheap pair of headers, a good torque converter, and some sticky tires. Make sure the engine is running as good as it can. Address any maintenance and tune up issues. But don't go crazy on expensive ignition parts. Stock parts are more then adequate. A few of the free mods wouldn't hurt, port the plenum and runners, bypass the throttle body coolant passage, bump the timing, open up the air box. Consider a lower temp fan switch to keep the temps down between runs. Clean all the junk out of the back, leave the spare at home, etc.

do a basic tune up on the engine make sure you can get the most out of it
do free mods : grind down the EGR walls behind the TB, TB bypass, gut the air boxs, shave the weight down where you can,

next i would get a AFPR and set it to 50lbs people claimed that its worth almost 10 hp, go to the bone yards and look for a AL drive shaft once again this is cheap mods

as for intake, its gonna get expensive. depending on your skills and your local machine shop you might be able to lt1 intake conversion. with those mods and luck with traction you might be able to pull this off

Excuse me but a full exhaust system is the best investment for more hp without taking off the intake manifold.

I agree, headers are a great idea... But not the most expensive set on the market when the budget is limited. You're talking about a $800 set of headers, and $500 cat-back, plus other parts when he's saying his budget is $1000 to reach his goal. Exhaust alone isn't going to make a full second impact on ET's. Try reading the thread before you reply.

A set of Dyno Don Headers cost about $600 and a Cat Back cost about $250-$300. Labor is about $100-$150. $50 bucks over the budget. Check it out!

Re: Help me beat my dad at the strip...

DD headers.. $570 http://www.top-downsolutions.com/pro...roducts_id=170
Y-pipe for the headers... $230 http://www.top-downsolutions.com/pro...roducts_id=172
Magnaflow cat-back $465 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-16829/

None of that includes shipping... Want to borrow my calculator? Or explain where you're finding the same parts for less money?
