Yes you need to change out the ECM's because the 87 uses a MAF Sensor while the the 89 uses Speed Density. Also I think the 89 has the VATS. You cant put 305 injectors on a 350 because the 305 injectors are 19 lbs while the 350's are 21 lbs. A good and cheap set of aluminum heads are Patriots. But Im not sure if they come with the hydraulic lifter style.

The ecm would still need swaped regardless, but wasn't 90 was the first year for the speed density (map) system?

Re: 87 z28

The ECM is the same for 305 and 350. The only things that are different are the chip, injectors, and knock sensor. 87 and 89 are both MAF, but the 89 does not use the cold start injector.

you forgot a few things Rod.There are more differences in the 305 to 350. you forgot the ESC Module, and its not called a chip, its called a MemCal or PROM, 19 lb vs 21 lb injectors. The model number of the ECM is 1227165. For a better understanding of the swap, go here ( http://tpiparts.net/305_tpi_to_350_tpi_conversion ). It'll explain more in detail. Rob Behring just threw you the nuts without the bolts.

Re: 87 z28

The 3 things I listed were the parts I changed when I did the L98 swap on my 88 and it works great. And yes it is a MEM-CAL, I said chip in case the OP didn't know that.

Chevy86IROCZ, what's with the attitude, you're the one who said it was SD

Re: 87 z28

Yes. I did mention SD. So I was incorrect. And Rod is right. You could run 19 lb injectors, use the 305 MemCal, and 305 knock sensor on a 350 but you will run the risk of shortening the life of the engine. 350 and 305 both give off a certain frequency when ping, detonation, or knock occurs. If you use the wrong knock sensor, the ECM will not retard the spark advance to protect the engine. As for the injectors, you can use either or but your performance and fuel economy will be affected.
Now as for using a 305 MemCal on a 350, you'll get bad gas mileage, poor performance, and horrible hesitation when you punch the gas pedal. It'll get you from point A to point B. I still got my 305 MemCal in my 350 IROC but the actual PROM is bypassed because of the Moates G1 adapter. I had a fellow buddy here on the boards burn a slightly modified 87 IROC bin file. Rod, I didn't mean to sound rude. If I gave you the assumption of me being rude, I appologize.
