Sorry, Another Cold start thread.

The car is a 1985, 305 TPI, once it starts it has no problems idling or anything like that.

The problem is starting it, I crank in 4-5 second bursts and it takes 3-4 trys of cranking it, toward the end before it starts you can kinda feel it firing off once or twice and then it starts up perfect, idles down and all is good

Dont have a fuel pressure gauge, so my uncle pressed in the schrader valve, With the key on the fuel pump doesnt send any fuel? It doesnt even start to send fuel till i start cranking. It isn't suppose to be like that is it?

i ohm'd out the injectors, they're all within range of each other. i put a fan relay in place of the fuel pump relay just to see what would happen (not sure if they're close enough a relay to actually work?) still acted the same.

I've been told "needa fuel pump" but i just don't understand how that could be it when it pumps so good from idle to redline?

Once it warms up, i can cut it off and on and it'll start. If i wait longer than 5-10 minutes, i better hope the batterys in a good mood.

its got a code 33, or 34. MAF related, not sure if this would somehow be relative to the issue.

Re: Sorry, Another Cold start thread.

There should be fp with the ko and you should be able to hear the pump prime with the key in just the on position.

Not sure about the following but it may be worth a search:
Think I remember reading here somewhere that with a bad relay the fp will not energize till the ecm sees oil pressure.
Cant remeber if the 85 has the cold start (9th) injector, it can cause part if your symptoms.
Need to ck/clean the maf and ck the relay on those codes, it can be part of your trouble as well. If you replace the maf, the 85 is different than the 86-89 types and Im not sure they are compatible.

Hope this helps some

Re: Sorry, Another Cold start thread.

Thanks. I remember seeing a thread about the bad relay, causing it to wait till oil pressure to get the pump going, But the post was a little vague.

the 85's do have a cold start, i hope that isn't it because i think they're discontinued and expensive, But I'm not hearing the fuel pump prime with key on, so I'm gonna try and fix it from the beginning, From what i understand with a bad cold start injector it'll crank for 3-4 seconds and start, i would be fine with that lol.

Yeah if its bad there is a block off kit made for it that is cheap, or again I remember reading here that an injector from some other make/model will work as a replacement.

Re: Sorry, Another Cold start thread.

So does anyone know what would cause the fuel pump not to prime with the key on?
