86 trans am

just got an 86 t/a with a 305 t.p.i that someone started converting to a carb set up. would i be better off staying with the carb or going back 2 the tpi and what all needs to be done to make it run right either way? If this helps at all, it LOOKS like they have most swapped over for carb...... any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!! thanks...

Re: 86 trans am

Thats a tough one. First thing I would have to ask is what does your state require for emmissions? Also what parts do you have and how badly hacked up is your original stuff like the wiring? If you dont have the original intake or your wiring's hacked up and emissions are not an issue its probably easier to finish what was started. If you do have the original stuff and your wiring and stuff looks ok you could go back to TPI but its a matter of preference at that rate. As for what needs to be done? That depends on what has been done and which way you want to go.

Re: 86 trans am

emissions not an issue...all i have is the lower part of the intake for the tpi. would i need a different sending unit in the take or would the fuel pump on the motor be able to pull fuel through the electric pump without it having power??

Re: 86 trans am

I'm not an expert, but I doubt that the fuel pump on the engine would be able to pull fuel out of the tank past the electric pump that is in there. I would think you could just use the pump in the tank with a regulator as long as the regulator has a return on it to send the extra fuel back to the tank.

As far as the big block goes, I'd go with an LS engine instead! You get substantial weight savings over the big block, better fuel efficiency and a fairly equal amount of power all for about the same amount of money. Just my two cents.
