idle air control?

Engine: 305 tpi
Transmission: 5 speed
idle air control?
first off its an 86 305. when in park the idle is higher than it should be...around 1500. same thing in neutral. then in any drive gear it is around 800 to 1000
however when you put it in gear it bogs down and stalls. could this be as simple as a faulty iac valve? i was meaning to check the voltage today so i will follow up with what that reads. anyone have a similar issue?
