OK guys. I did a search and I know the causes of a TC 45. But my question is a dumb one, but logical one. If I where to drive with a nearly empty fuel tank, could I get a code 45 due to the pump sucking up air and causing a false fuel pressure? I need to clear this out before I start buying parts. And yes, my fuel gauge doesn't work. I know how much my tank lasts when it goes from full to empty, but I been having a few street races so I know that I dont have what I should as in fuel.

no pump gets air, enigne quits running. shop manual shows code 45 as a rich condtion with possible causes such as TPS faulty, Evap canister saturated & not able to purge. ecm seeing lower than normal MAP out put, somewhere i remember a clogged cat converter being a probably cause too.

Actually when I was done rebuilding my engine, I had a few gallons of fuel in the tank. After many attempts of trying to figure out why I couldn't rev passed 2000 rpms, the engine would sputter and die. That's when I found out that my gauge didn't work. So my uncle verified that I had no fuel by pressing on the fuel pressure nozzle on the fuel rail. And behold, there was fuel sputtering out along with misty gas as the air escaped the port. So yes, air can get into the system via fuel pump. I've had it happen a few times as a matter a fact. So that's why I put that I can calculate my fuel level when its full. No cat, just a 3 inch pipe, Bosch III injectors, MAF, not MAP. how do I open the Evap canister to verify if its saturated? Ill buy a new TPS just for the hell of it.

the canister is replaced as a unit. there is a filter in the bottom of it you can see once its removed, but i haven't seen that filter on the market for a while. Did you test fuel pressure by renting or buying a fuel pressure gauge? check to make sure you have at least 45 psi and have you changed the fuel filter? clogged fuel filters can limit an engines ability to rev up. mine clogged and I could barely make it to 40mph untill I changed it.

Same issue as you, replaced the 02 sensor, wide-band is showing a rich/lean rocking back and froward pattern. Have not tested the TPS the right way yet, while the Open Element was off, i moved the lever and it raced the engine a lil bit. My fuel filter is new, TBI cone patterns are good, i know you have TPI but could be same issue. Tested out the evap canister, was good, removed it, was empty.
I do get a code 32 as well, which ive tested my egr valve and it works fine, so im assuming its a vac hose somewhere, which will have to be hid very very well as ive taken off all the smog stuff and ac.
If you find a solution plz post back!

rough, how do you say you have the same issue 86IROCZ when you have a code 32 and his a code 45? Your code 32 is because you have removed your EGR and the ECM isn't seeing the signal from the EGR temp sensor.
Chevy86IROCZ, what's up my brother? Haven't heard from you in a while. So you rebuilt your motor huh? That's cool. Testing the canister is easy. Apply ground to the ECM activation circuit of the Purge solenoid with a scan tool connected and watch for Integrator to drop and stay low. It should come down some and slowly recover as the vapors are drawn from the canister. If Integrator stays low, it likely means that the canister is saturated.
From reading your posts, it almost sounds like you may have a rotted section of hose between your fuel pump and sending unit. O2 sensor isn't a bad idea if you don't know how old it is. You can test MAF with a scan tool to verify it's accuracy and consistency. Again watch Integrator and Block Learn while watching MAF data and O2 voltage. Look for O2 to go high under acceleration and low under decel. MAF should go high as 4.5v at WOT and low as 1.6 at idle. MAF with key on engine off should be about .5v.

Not to be rude, but we do have a similar problem, and I have duel codes, which includes code 45, as code 32 has been popping on the code for years now.
Code 45 - Engine is running way rich
Code 32 - EGR - Which Ive tested, "STill have on my car" and is 100% function-able.
Last time i checked, EGR sensor's were discontinued, and my car does not have one.
The EGR is worked off vacuum , no electrical connections, on or around the unit. I know the computer has some input from a system from the EGR hence why you have to disable it in the ECM if you block it off.

So I was out tinkering around before work today, and I noticed that my coil pack was separating from the metal ring that hugs it, I shimmed it up so it would not rattle around, also moved the coil plug to the dist away from the throttle.
I also removed my air filter " have open air " took her for a drive, big increase, it doesn't surge as bad now. I'm really leaning on new wires now which im hoping will fix the issue.
Been reading alot of issues from wires, I do have the MSD wires, but they are now 2 years old. I guess lots of other brands will allow the spark to travel the wire, or reach a great distance to arc.

Its typical for the E-core coils to beloose in their frame. This can cause a buzzing in high output applications but no change in performance. If it's a problem, use RTV to glue the coil to the frame. Code 45 isn't caused by ignition. Ignition drop out will cause a false lean reading from the O2. My MSD wires are 6 years old and work like new. The only reliable method for pinpointing a fault in fuel trims is using a scan tool to view fuel trims and comparing fuel trims to actual AFR as verified by reading the spark plugs. If your O2 sensor is old, replace it anyway.

Im thinking O2 sensor. On OE systems, the O2 is the key to maintaining stoich(14.7:1 AFR). Of course always check ignition just to be sure it's healthy. If you haven't read my method before, use an old, known good ignition wire to run an inline, bulb type spark tester up to the windshield where you can see it while you drive. Run the car and watch for the bulb to go dim or not flash at all, especially under hard acceleration.

Replaced the 02 sensor no luck, even my wide band is showing issues, which is brand new :/ Code 42 - tps came up as well which might be different from Chevy's issues. But the 42 didn't show up till later, gonna replace the TPS as soon as I can find a place to get one from, as most local vendors do not carry them.

Code 42 is EST circuit problem. Not TPS. EST circuit can cause surging. Check the condition of your distributor. Is there excessive rust on the pole piece and timing core? Are either of these loose on the base or shaft? I've seen this cause code 42 and surging idle.

ASE doc!!! whats up bro. Ive been extremely busy man. Im a full time student for another 2 months. As for the rebuilt engine, I rebuilt it around 2 years ago. But as for the issues at hand, Im waiting on a buddy to work in the "commercial" section of Autozone. He can get me a 20% discount by using his employee membership discount. But rest assured. Ill let you know what happens when I get the MAF Sensor and O2 sensor replaced.

Ok guys. I just finished my mid-term exams this morning. I'm gonna go and pick up a new reman altenator, reman MAF Sensor, and a new fuel filter. Im shooting to get them installed by Sunday. I was hoping to get it done today but I must practice batting with my 8 year old boy. 5 at bats yesterday and he struck out all 5 times during his baseball game
