355 tpi issues

355 tpi, 24# injectors, bbk adjustable fuel pressure regulator, accel fuel pressure gauge.

just finished putting it back together tonight and the battery died after a few starts. it's starting very hard (guessing timing) but my main concern is the fuel sprays right out of the vacuum port on the regulator. there's two holes in the fuel rail for the fuel to travel to the injectors (under the regulator) but it seems that the fuel is bypassing those and going through the vacuum port (I assume this port is more of a breather than anything?)
So it seems the screw to adjust the pressure should go in more (lower the pressure), so I turned it in all the way and get the same result..
Also I was really hoping I could get away without having a prom burned for the car since I know nothing about prom work.. think that's possible?

I honestly think the fuel isn't even moving past the regulator and into the sides of the rail because I pulled my gauge off the rail (with system primed) and no hint of fuel on it and the psi didn't move.
Could it be a bad regulator? could I have installed the shim inside wrong?
I need the car moving ASAP so any responses are much appreciated.

thanks, Tim

Re: 355 tpi issues

Fuel shouldn't spray out of the vacuum port on the AFPR. Looks like the diaphram is F***ed.

Good luck.

Re: 355 tpi issues

If you switch to the 24#ers you will need a chip that is tuned to support the larger injector.

Re: 355 tpi issues

Tmic87TPI, Your fuel pressure regulator diaphram is ruptured. The port you refer to is for vacuum. By applying manifold vacuum to this port, the engineers were able to fine tune fuel pressure in concert with engine load. Remove the cover and check/replace the diaphram.

Re: 355 tpi issues

Ok thanks for the in put to all that gave me advice. Im dealing with bigger problem now. A stock eprom would work with the jet chip i got but dont know what all i can snag one from. 87 to 90 tpi im taking it ? The shop i had the motor done at said to keep the #24 an get stock chip for 350 it should support the injectors with the jet chip installed. Getting to point of (get rid of tpi an go carb) but like to keep tpi.
