i know nothing about cams so plz dont bash me for it. i have a 305 tpi thats in my irocz and i am rebuilding it and strokin it out i am keepin the same motor in it i am buying this stroker kit http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ESP-B13102L03068/
i am also having the stock heads ported and polished with new valve springs. i want a cam that will give great power but still be able to be a daily driver at the same time. i know nothing about cams i jus need sometin that will work well. also my 2nd question is it worth it to stroke the engine out or jus keep it a 305 and jus put a cam and get the heads done. also what would be a good tc since i know nothing about again i am putting in a 700r4 tranny thats built to race strip with 1300 hp.

I can only answer 2 of your questions. IMO, Ive never heard of a stroked 305, but im sure there are some out there. No as for the cam, there is a "Computer Controlled" cam from Comp Cams. But it costs about $200+. Now there is the LT1 cam from the 4th gen Z28's. That only cost around $50 used. But here is your biggest problem, The LT1 Cam is a roller cam. Your 305 is a flat tappet. Im not too sure if your block is interchangable for a roller cam. The big concern about the cams in the 305 to the 350 is that for the 305, is that the cam is a flat tappit and the 350 is a roller cam. With the roller cam, there is a plate that holds the cam in its place within the cam bearings. This plate has 2 bolts that protrude a bit which would interfere with the timing chain sprocket. I would call Summit and ask them if your stock block flat tappit cam can be switched out with a roller cam. Now if you can switch, you will need to measure the diameter and length of the push rods to have the proper width clearance of the bore for the pushrods. Remember, flat tappet lifters are shorter than roller lifter. Also with flat tappet lifters, the pushrods are longer than the roller lifter push rods. But bottom line, call Summit Racing and ask them for options for your 305 as well as applications that are within your budget. Dont forget that your engine is "Computer Controlled."

Re: rebuilding my 305 tpi jus need help with the cam
To verify if the block can interchange with a roller, u need to get the block casting number off of the passengerside where the tranny bellhousing mounts. Do a search online and check the charts. Let me explain about an 86 IROC-Z 305 with flat tappit. I have an 86 IROC vin F. Before I bought my overhaul kit, I bought a camshaft from Oriellies (Kragen at the time). the computer stated a flat tappet cam for my 86 vin f Camaro. Now when I pulled the block, to my suprise, the cylinder bore was 4" across. I checked the casting number and it ended up being a 350, not a 305. So as I further tore it down, I realized it was a roller. So check the casting number and post it and ill help you out.

Re: rebuilding my 305 tpi jus need help with the cam
I just checked the autozone page and it seems that the 86 305 was made with a roller cam. Get the casting number off of the block. Then we can check if the block is compatible with a roller cam. I have a 86 but with a 350 (L98). I did the whole 305 to 350 conversion with a custom programmed EPROM to deliver the proper fuel to my 21 lbBosch III's. 305 blocks use 19 lb FI while the 350 uses 21 lb FI.
