Rewire IAT
Well.
The wonnders never cease. Can't seem to find the IAT on this booger (91 305 TPI). Found the fog light connectors hanging loose behind the grill as she's got an RS grill on her and no lights... IE I pulled the air cleaner box and all, no IAT. Lifted her up and slid about looking, no IAT no tan and black wires... well, that's not true... found a tan wire but it was loose on one end and spliced into the butt of a grey wire on the other, coming out of the harness near front of pass side head....
Now this thing is supposed to have a black and a tan wire on it's connector, right? The tan runs to the ECM? And the black goes into the black wire going to the TPS?
Anyone know how it would normally be routed? I'd like to track down the original wires... does it usually follow one of the lighting bundles going to the headlights etc? Or the fan bundles? Anyone know?
Also, I've occasionally gotten code 32, but after cleaning up the EGR that went away.... however I was told that the ECM pops this code for the IAT (misnamed Baro Pressure Sensor). Should 32 be popping if it isn't there? Codes are clear now, and nothing popping...
I just want everything hooked back up right...

Yep. Under the plenum towards the rear. More of a 'feel for' item than 'able to see'
Re: Rewire IAT
Hey thanks guys, I was tearing up the internet trying to find the location of this piece of gear. I know you answered my question. I was going to relocate it to the air box would that be an adverse location? just wondering.

Re: Rewire IAT
I am hearing of that being done with positive results. The factory placed the IAT(calling it a Manifold Air Temp sensor) in the plenum over concerns of high underhood temps and their affect on air temp going through the plenum. At some point, they moved the MAT to the air box and called it an IAT.
The BARO sensor you refer to is identical to a MAP sensor and was used on ealier CCC cars. Your 91 Speed Density car will have a MAP sensor. On Speed Density cars, the MAP also serves as a BARO sensor, taking a BARO reading each time the key is turned on, before the engine is started.

Re: Rewire IAT
heh! Thanks. I had an inkling it may be there, just replaced the EGR gasket and cleaned up the EGR last week so I know exactly which beeblefetzer you refer to.... Didn't make the connection because everywhere I look (except here!) on the web, it says it's in the aircleaner box.... Hehe. Thanks bunches!!! That turd will be relocated to enjoy the company of my air cleaners soon. The plenum is hardly a temp neutral location. ;-)

Re: Rewire IAT
You'll note that the IAT sensor has a sensor probe surrounded in screen that actually sees air and responds quicly to changes in air temp. The MAT sensor in the plenum is nothing more than a coolant temp sensor. It was put in the plenum as much to measure casting temp as air temp.

Do the same search, here on TGO, that I did to find that link. You'll find many people have done it & apparently it was designed by a TGO member.
EDIT:I went ahead & did the search for you

Re: Rewire IAT
I'm not running a stock setup as I am running a megasquirt. But I was using the stock location in the plenum with a IAT sensor with the plastic screen. I had some serious heat soak issues which is known on megasquirts. So recently moved the sensor to the airbox and plugged the plenum hole and my heat soak issue is fixed.
After sitting for 10 minutes the stock location would read up to 150+ deg and while driving never got below 100. Now with it moved I have not seen it go above 100 deg after sitting and as soon as you start driving it goes down to ambient temp.
Again I am not running a stock computer but it gives you an idea that it will probably like the sensor being in the air box over being in the plenum.

Re: Rewire IAT
Oh yeah. I can't imagine the IAT sensor liked the plenum environment. I still have the stock MAT sensor but have it pretty much tuned out of the program, except at extreme high or low temps. I have functional hood louvers that keep my underhood very cool. After a long day of cruising, I can lay my hands on my intake and it's barely warm. I plan on doing the relocation and swap to an IAT sensor sometime this year. It will help make the most of cool morning air.
At least a few guys on this forum have done the swap and report improved throttle response.

Re: Rewire IAT
guess its time to relocate it then for some of us huh? i already ran the wires 3 weeks ago but wanted to wait for a discussion such as this. think ill mount mine right in my airbox near a bottleneck area to increase cool air.

Re: Rewire IAT
The Camaro air filter lid already has a spot, at least on my 87, for the sensor. It was marked in the plastic, just not opened. It's just at the edge of the drivers side where the tube starts back to the MAF. The later cars had the IAT mounted right there.

Re: Rewire IAT
It's okay. I've seen the IAT mounted just about everywhere in the inlet air tract. I'm picturing the T/A air inlet. You may have to go into the air filter housing. I wouldn't want to cut into the rubber anywhere.

Mine is right after the MAF, coming up from the bottom so it is hidden as well as the wiring to/from it.

Re: Rewire IAT
im thinking in the filter housing right next to the inlet tube so it catches the coolest air. moving air is cooler then sitting air. later on i may make a much bigger filter housing. depends on my mood.

Be careful with BlackenedBird's advice. He's a madman who puts gazillion horsepower bigblock fords into thirdgen TAs. He's probably dangerous.
LOL! Seriously, you should check out his thread on the subject. It is epic.
Edit: I wish to apologize and correct my gross misstatement. It was not BlackenedBird who installed the BBF into a thirdgen and he assures us he would never do such a thing. It was infact the infamous Custom Blackbird who perpetrated this act of heresy. LOL!

Re: Rewire IAT
I have NEVER put a BBF in ANY GM, much less a 3rd gen.
I have NO thread about doing so. You are thinking of somebody else.
You are thinking of customblackbird https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/engi...gine-swap.html
Please edit your post to remove anybody misreading & thinking I would have anything to do with a BBF swap.

Re: Rewire IAT
i have relocated my iat sensor to my slp cold air intake box on my trans am gta... i got a plug and put under the plenum.... i had to lengthen the wires for it to reach all the way to the slp box... i routed it in a way to where its almost looks factory.... you would need a iat sensor from a tbi car because the factory plug is solid compared to the tbi unit being an open sensor..... i noticed that the car ran a bit better and didnt seem to get hot like it did before...... i say its worth the upgrade...

Re: Rewire IAT
Just a small word of potential failure on those V6 IATs.
The resistor in the cage is (apparently) just pressed into their socket (inside the "cage") & might not be soldered or secured in place.
My first IAT had its resistor come out. Fortunately my IAT it located coming up from the bottom, so when the resistor came out it fell back into the sensor (not out) & didn't go into my engine to get eaten by a valve/piston/rings/spark plug. It stayed. Maybe it popped out as I shut the engine off which allowed it to fall & get stuck?
So I had to replace it. After almost 3 years now & my 2nd IAT hasn't "broken". So maybe the 1st one was incorrectly assembled at the factory & didn't get soldered in place like it was supposed to be?
So maybe it is a good idea to check the IAT before leaving the store.

Re: Rewire IAT
I just left my stock IAT in place instead of removing the plenum & having to buy a plug or having to buy new runner gaskets. Just reached in, unplugged the wires, lengthened them & plugged it into the new IAT. But you will find that the plugs are different & hafta shave off the clip stub on the sensor itself, to fit in the OEM TPI IAT (just a water sensor really).

Re: Rewire IAT
thanks for the advance but if mine did ever fell out it wouldnt get anywhere because my k&n filter is blocking it making it impossible for it to get by..... but i got mine from a v8 tbi car...

Re: Rewire IAT
The IAT screws up into the bottom of the upper plenum very middle left/right near cylinders 5 & 6. The 2 wires come from the very back past the dizzy.
Re: Rewire IAT
On mine I cant seem to find where the other end of the wire plug connects to. One end is connected to the sensor under plenum and the other end is just laying by the distributor unplugged? where does that end plug into?

On Firebirds, would an LT1 intake elbow work for this? They have a spot for the sensor built in.
