oxygen un plugged but no code

1987 firebird 305 .my oxygen sensor in unplugged why don't i have a code. or how long will it take ? the idle is running rough .

I would like to know why as well. Maybe it's related to why my sensor is operating way out of range (4 mv at idle) and making my exhaust intoxicatingly rich, yet no code either.
