Fuel Injector problems....

Long time lover first time poster. I recently bought my 3rd, 3rd gen! (NICE I didn't even notice that before!) Ok so I took it to a mechanic/satan spawn who I just wanted to do a good check (which they did) and then change fluids and a good tune as it had been sitting for 2yrs. SO he comes back and tells me that I need new injectors. Says that 5 of 8 are shorting out. I bought the car knowing it has some issues and want to learn about engines as I never got into them while I was younger. As he quoted me $1400 to do the injectors never mind any of the original stuff the car is coming home soon and I'll start my work on the injectors. Now my questions are these:

1) Has this happened to anyone else? 5 of 8?
2) Anyone have any good information about which injectors to get?
3) Any good tips on the job would be greatly appreciated. I have a chiltons, a computer, and a good attitude that will undoubtedly become a cursing mess when I start.

Look forward to hearing from you all. Great forum and thanks ahead of time.

Re: Fuel Injector problems....

Im just scratching the surface on some possible injector issues with my 91 but I noticed in my Haynes book it specified what the injector resistance should be you might want to verify the resistances yourself as 5 failed injectors out of 8? Would the car even start? Maybe he is referring to the duration the injectors are staying open or something. Anyway I'll be watching this thread to see what others say as I'm looking some of my own issues. Good luck

I just did an injector swap on my 305, bought the bosche 3 from south bay fuel injectors. The job was actually pretty simple, there is a great write up here that explains in detail. Best of luck to you!

I'll second the Bosch III injectors.

$1400 to change the injectors? Ridiculous.

These cars are at the age where the injectors start going. Pretty common problem.

I just did the same, not that hard to do. Original clips wouldnt work with the bosch III's and i pinched a oring, had to take it all apart and do it again. Tip: check fuel rail/ injectors for leaks by turning your key to prime a couple of times before you put everything back together lol.

Re: Fuel Injector problems....

Forgot to mention the reason I replace the injectors in the first place. My car wouldn't go more than 45 mph but ran fine at idle. One injector wasn't even plugged in and I guess a couple more failed finally. Best money spent, SouthBay were great with price and service. One more thing, while I had it all apart the second time and went ahead and replaced the EGR valve, serpentine belt, and water pump. They all looked pretty rough. Car runs like a champ now. Good luck

Even if you do not purchase from us...it still drives me crazy to see how other companies and shops rip people off with the outrageous prices that they charge for a job that you would probably enjoy doing yourselves for a "1/4" of the cost.
beaurummel if we can help in anyway please do not hesitate to give us a call.

So I'm still a little confused do you have to remove the whole airflow system to get to the injectors?

You can actually get away with removing the thrpttlebody/plenum and just the driverside runners. I also had to move the alternator to get some room to disconnect the fuel rail and get it out.

Re: Fuel Injector problems....

talked to the guy who actually looked at the injectors and the mechanic was indeed refering to the duration that they were staying open. I don't know if this is a solvable problem by simply cleaning them but i've already ordered new bosch 3's from southbay as it will do nothing but help the performance of my car. Look forward to hearing more from everyone and appreciate all the input thus far.

Re: Fuel Injector problems....

the cost for a set of 22lb bosch lll's is $165 but with your tgo discount they come out to $148.50 for the set. As far as the fuel pump is concerned we do not carry them but if you want i can see if i can get one for you

Re: Fuel Injector problems....

We have a 1989 Formula 350 L98 TPI and are going through injector problems now also. It is all stock and has original parts on it at about 152,000 miles.

The car is not driven frequently (few hundred miles/yr) and has been running rough recently. It seemed to be running ok when I parked it last. Mechanic said Oxygen sensor was bad and replaced it. After that the car still ran poorly and he tested ohms on the injectors. Several were out of specs. The car actually ran better with one disconnected. He recommended replacing all of them.

Did some searching and eventually found this forum and decided to order Bosch III injectors from South Bay Injectors today. They were very helpful. Thank you South Bay for taking the time to discuss my questions. I also saw their youtube video and it was informative.

Re: Fuel Injector problems....

The injector swap from stock to Bosch 3 went well. I swapped all eight injectors. The car drove and performed fine post swap. At least two of the stock injectors weren't working or working well I believe.

Thank you to forum , mechanic and SouthBay.

Re: Fuel Injector problems....

While we are on the subject is there any advantage from going to a Bosch lV injector from a Bosch lll? I understand the Bosch lV has a slightly thinner profile than the Bosch lll which would help in my situation.

They are both great products, but the bosch lV is about the same thickness as the bosch lll's. If anything, the difference is ever so slight.

Do some research on this forum and others. The bosch lll's imo are one of the most efficient and reliable injectors out there.

one more plug for Southbay... I emailed because I had a few questions, ordered, and just got them all in and the car buttoned up last night... I guess I should have read up on the subject a bit because I did end up removing the plenum and both runners; not hard but took some time...

Re: Fuel Injector problems....

Thanks for all the above info. Wanted to get an opinion on a dealer's diagnosis. First my son but his 91 z28 convertible into a tree. Walked away, and 8 months later we have it back together and running excelpt, it goes about 6 miles and then looses power suddenly and will not fire up for a few hours. We have spark and the full pump was running. We broke down in front of a chevy dealer so I decided to have them look at it. The diagnosis was bad injectors. Said they would heat up and then shut down the system. THeir quote was $1976.00 (Not going to happen). This has ben a learning experience for both me and my son but before we tear it apart and put new ones in, does anyone think the diagnosis sounds reasonable. By the way they did break it down and electrically test it for only $170. Thanks for your advice.

add on to the above. The car ran great prior to the wreck. But was not run for 8 months. It did pass emissions testing the day before it died. But only drove it for 2 miles.

Re: Fuel Injector problems....

I'm in the process of replacing my engine in my 91 Trans am and I'm also going to be needing some injectors as one of the stock ones was shorted out,I've heard nothing but good about the Bosch III ones so thats what I'm going for,I'll be calling southbay tomorrow.
My only concern is which do I need the car is a 305tpi T-5 car and it calls for 19lb injectors,But I have read that the 22lb will work also.which would be the preferred one to use..I'm going back stock with headers,The motor is going to be a .40 bored over long block I have had sitting here waiting to be installed..I'm going to use my cam and lifters because I don't know what was used in the block so I want it to match properly..anyway and should I go ahead and get an adjustable fpr while I'm at it?or would that even make a difference being its stock?Thank you,Plus I like the idea of getting a TGO discount..That rocks!!!!

Re: Fuel Injector problems....

Dear All,

I'm a proud owner of a 91z28 5.7, but seem to have a hesitation problem right from making the car move. Usually a little from start and every now and then the "Service Engine Soon" lights comes on, but will disappear. I have read to check all vacuum hoses, electrical connectors, before researching and found nothing unplugged. For tune up I've changed my: distributor cap, rotor, map, TPS, IAV, and sparg plugs, but nothing seems to get rid of this minor annoying problem. The engine doesn't die unless I put in reverse. But starts right back up. But once moving my car drives with no problems and hauls ***. I've read to check the ohms of injectors and they all read 14.6. Is the correct reading for this vehicle? Or are these not the correct injectors for this vehicle. They have a yellow color, I'm assuming bosch, and could be a swap also. another thing is when I replaced my heater core recently I've noticed that my ECU was made in 1995. Since my car is a 91, I"m assuming the previous owner swapped it. How do I know he swapped out a correct one? Does anyone have any clues as to what I need to check next? The only thing I can come up with is to check timing and the fuel pump pressure. Does anyone know what the lbs are suppose to be? I just want this guy to run right, so I can move on to the next area, but I can't seem to get rid of this hesitation problem.

You need 22lb injectors for a 5.7.
What is part number on the injector??

Dear Southbay I'm not sure what the part number is, but what are the actual ohms reading for a 22 lb injector?

Re: Fuel Injector problems....

The average ohm reading on injectors from different manufacturers is variable, however the 22lb bosch lll should be around 14.0-14.5
