L98 Cam Question

Hey guys, I'm looking into doing a cam soon and had a few questions. I found this comp cam kit on summit for what seems like a good price.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-K12-210-2/

Now my car is not heavily modded or mildly modded I'd even say lol. I've got a cat-back and some drop in filters haha. I'm mainly looking for a little bit more power from the car, and that lopey-ness a cam brings.

So my questions are, does the cam kit I linked have all the necessary parts I need to do the install? Do I need more parts to go along with it? And is that cam kit even recommended for a car that's stock like mine?

Oh and for future modifications, I don't plan on going any crazier than this cam. No aftermarket heads, no porting..well maybe some porting lol, but you get the idea. I kinda want to just make the cam my last power mod for the motor haha. Trying to keep my car daily driveable!

Thanks!

1st up ; if your '92 has the original L98 engine then it has a roller cam so the cam you link is completely wrong type
2nd,
with roller lifters you only need a new roller cam ,( possibly some new valve springs to suit higher lift) , the stock roller lifters can be reused multiple times where as flat tappet type can only be used on one cam
3rd.
A cam swap on it's own may get you little improvement without supporting mods like headers and intake mods

And this is exactly why I ask these questions LOL. Yeah my car has the original L98. I'm a complete noob to the internals on this car so I need all the help I can get. Would you recommend me a cam based off of what I want to do with the car (or lack of), and what I have now? I appreciate the help!

Re: L98 Cam Question

And I did at some point want to do headers as well, but I didn't really consider that an engine internal mod.

A cam that will work best with your stock(ish ) engine will have no noticeable lope.
You most probably would get better bang for $$ results from a upgraded exhaust instead of a cam only swap and with no need to open up engine

The lumpy cam sound you "want' is not compatible with your other aims.
Big ,lopey cams need head / intake / exhaust mods to work; a whole package based on compatible parts
One part on it's own can often do little , sometimes reducing performance and fuel economy

Re: L98 Cam Question

Alrighty I see. Well that's good to know then, instead of doing a cam I'll just invest in a nice set of headers/y-pipe. This particular car I didn't want to go too crazy on internal mods since it has a bit of rareity in it (B4C w/ 1LE parts). I'd rather do an all out build on a Z28.

So even the mild cam that my motor would react positively to, isn't a noticable increase in lope or performance?

Re: L98 Cam Question

you could use the crane powermax 2032 cam.. the part number is 104224 and its 214/220 duration 452 465 lift on a 112 lsa.. i used it in my stock headed l98....with full exhuast and headers it sure sounded different from stock you can tell its not stock... that cam was designed for 305 and 350 tpi engines that want to maximize low end torque..

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CRN-104224/

here is a video of my car with that cam and bolt ons and untunned

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yja12X-pCsI

and considering your in california this cam is carb legal so you shouldnt have any problems passing the sniffer....

Re: L98 Cam Question

I have a 91 z28 with a cam mod, head mod and exhaust all done at seperate stages. I started with exhaust which made a substantial difference. Of course i went to 3 in mandrel bent and edelbrock shorty headers to keep the smog somewhat working. I noticed after the exhaust was done an increase at the breathability in my motor. Better gas mileage and throttle response. It was like a new car. I had to do the cam and other mods due to an engine rebuild. I was in there anyways so why not right? With that said my suggestion to you is simple. If you have 2500 or more to redo the motor go that route but my 620 exhaust upgrade may be the way for you to go if you just want the sound...

Thank you very much! Man, your car sounds awesome lol. That's exactly the type of sound I'm going for. Nice to know its attainable with relatively stock parts. Now can you point me in the right direction of what valve springs to pick up along with the cam?

I'll then be on my merry way hahaha.

Re: L98 Cam Question

no problem man... that was my old engine.. since then i built a new engine with a different cam and intake... but im running these springs on my l98 heads

http://www.jegs.com/i/Manley/660/22410-16/10002/-1

also run these retainers
http://www.jegs.com/i/Manley/660/23651-16/10002/-1

use those two parts and that cam will run fine with them...should be good safely to about 520 lift with that... im currently using those same springs and retainers to run my gm hotcam which is .492 .492 lift with 1.5 rockers...

Again, thank you sir! The car doesn't need any kind of extra fuel support to run a cam either right? The stock injectors/rails/pump are all sufficient for that?

Re: L98 Cam Question

yes all the stock stuff will work.. the only other thing i would probably do is buy a 60 dollar adjustable fuel regulator.. it looks just like the stock one and bolts in the exact same place but it has a screw to adjust fuel pressure.. i would just set it a 45psi.. that cam is only like .30 higher lift in stock.... its not a big cam at all... but its just enough cam to let people know it isnt stock....

Three year old thread I know... still, Thanks 88fastgta! Useful stuff man. And I can unfortunately relate to the spun bearings!! 158k on my 90 Formula 350 when mine went. Hence how I found this thread. Most reassuring cam info I've read yet, especially with the vid attached! Undergoing a rebuild now myself. New cam, new crank (obviously with bearings spun) and valve guides, springs, etc. not porting. And svandorst, how'd this turn out for you?

Someone at Crane is smoking something good with the price of their cams these days!

I just installed an Elgin cam in a Vortec 350 I built for an Escalade. Honestly I think it would make a great TPI cam as well. It pulls well from just off-idle all the way through the 5,000 rpm shift points of the Escalade. It started right up and ran pretty well on the stock vortec tune but really woke up with a little fine tuning of the fuel and spark mapping.

LOL, I love the description they have for it!! Says it all. That is a hell of a price difference Fast355! Numbers aren't bad either.. How does it sound in the truck? Throaty at idle?

210/215 @ .050,
.462/.470" lift,
110* LSA
106* ICL
1,500-5,000 rpm powerband

It has BBK shorty headers, Magnaflow high flow cats, and a Magnaflow catback on it along with a Volant CAI. It has a slightly bumpy idle. Definately not a race car but you can definately tell it is not stock. Driving the truck, you would swear you were driving a 6.0L.
