Vehicle Speed Sensor for 85-89 TPI

Is the 2 pulse Vehicle Speed Sensor for the 85-89 tpi automatic transmissions the same one that is used on the manual 5-speeds for the same year models? I can only find one listing in the part stores like O'Reilly's and they list it for an automatic 700r4 transmission. The dealership can't find any information because it is a discontinued part. I would think they would be the same part; they work the same way and go on the same engine/ecm setup. Just want to double check before I purchase one. I know there are aftermarket performance parts out there, but I would like to just keep this thing as stock as possible. I am sure somebody out there knows this off the top of their head.

In any given year there where two versions of the VSS, dependent upon what diff ratio was installed; because as the size of the speedo gears changes (get bigger ) the VSS shaft had to be offset from center to accommodate them.
Split is
<3.0 rear ;VSS original part # 25007224
> 3.00 rear ;original part # 25007308
Many have had success by rotating the lower ratio VSS 180 degrees to fit the larger size speedo gear used with the higher ratio diff when swapping ratios

I am fairly sure that the VSS between the 5-spd and 700R4 are different. That is the T5 VSS is a small bullet type, while the 700R4 uses a larger housing.

They are also going to be a 4-pole magnetic unit (4K PPM).

Also, in '85 the VSS is in the speedometer head. It is an optical set up that outputs a 2K PPM signal.

There are some sticky's on the transmission & driveline board here about the VSS gears. IIRC, it also shows some of the VSS's?

They are different sizes and not interchangeable.

Re: Vehicle Speed Sensor for 85-89 TPI

Thank ya'll very much for the help! I don't know how I would have found out this information without the third gen community. I cross referenced the original part numbers and found a company online called Tomco-Inc that has these parts in a part number of their own. (They are in St. Louis Mo.) One of them is like $95 bucks, the other is like $140 or something close to that. They also provided illustrations of the part itself. Thought I would mention this if anyone else down the road runs into this problem. Also, I called O Reilly's and they were not able to cross reference the original part numbers with anything in their system, so it is safe to say they do not carry them at all. All they could say is yes, the original part number is an AC delco part number.

Here is the link for the TIMCO-Inc pdf cross reference tables:

http://www.tomco-inc.com/Catalog/veh...%20sensors.pdf

Thanks again!

Re: Vehicle Speed Sensor for 85-89 TPI

Is there anyway to find out the part number for an '87?? Strangely, TOMCO doesn't list anything for the 86-87 camaro or firebird. I can't find an ACDELCO number anywhere either. I'm pretty sure this is attached to the back of the speedo.... I'm getting the CODE 24 and am beginning to get frustrated by not knowing where to get this part. Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Just an FYI: If the rear wheels aren't turning when the code sets, you can disregard, according to the shop manual.

Okay then, what sets off the code if it's not the VSS??

I believe the above info (part numbers & different rear gears) is partially incorrect, but need some verification...

I'm doing a swap ('88 TA TPI engine into '85 TA L69/T5 w/3.73s) and the new dash cluster from the '88 is digital, while the old '85 cluster has a direct cable driven speedo (with NO yellow VSS conversion box). From the parts diagrams I've seen, it looks like #25007318 is a yellow box that sits on the back of the digital gauge clusters (see attached photos from CWP Autoparts of #25007318).

I'm looking for the sender that bolts into the tailshaft of the T5 and replaces the cable-driven housing (I believe '86 and newer T5s had the VSS in the tail), which I believe would be part #25007224 (ACDelco 213-210).

Tomco also has part numbers, and in their catalog #25007318 is the cluster-mounted VSS (yellow box, Tomco #31032) while #25007308 is for D9B optioned vehicles (Tomco #31018) and #25007224 is for 9DA optioned vehicles (Tomco #31019).
I'm not familiar with differences between 9DA and D9B, but it looks like we have three options:

1) GM #25007308 (no known ACDelco #, Tomco #31018) is a VSS sender that is mounted on the T5 (opt D9B?). Perhaps this is for >3.0 gears (vs. xxxx7318 like vetteoz & Tuned Performance suggested).
2) GM #25007224 (ACDelco #213-210, Tomco #31019) is a VSS sender that is mounted on the T5 (opt 9DA?). According to this page, #25007224 is the VSS sender only, while the since-discontinued #25007308 (above) has the VSS and the plastic drive gear.
3) GM #25007318 (ACDelco #213-108, Tomco #31032) is a yellow VSS/cable box that mounts to the back of the gauge cluster. Should work for all gears as the cable is calibrated at the transmission.

So it seems that #25007224 is what I would want for my swap to get the VSS directly from the T5... and I could reuse the existing gear off the cable drive as well, correct?

Re: Vehicle Speed Sensor for 85-89 TPI

It appears all the above part numbers are for 700R4 VSS senders, as I ordered 25007308 and it was easily twice the size as my T5 mounted sender. Looking around (this page is helpful on 1984-1988 C4 T5 Corvette swap), it seems as though the T5 sender is 10456087, which has since been discontinued.
