Best upgrade for a 91 model L98 TPI

Hello guys/girls.

What are the best performance upgrades for a L98. Already have the stock exhaust removed and fitted it with Hooker headers and Flowmaster exhaust.

It's installed in my 1988 Firebird GTA. Want it to move a little

Does it make a difference to go from stock 1.5 rockers to 1.6 roller rockers?

Regards, Peter.

Not getting any love from thirdgen I see. Wish I could recommend some for you but I only know about exotics and LS engines as far as modifications. I am new to thirdgen myself as I just bought a 1989 GTA. Dig through the forums on here and GTAsourcepage and there are a lot of recommendations out there.

Re: Best upgrade for a 91 model L98 TPI

You're not getting a lot of replies because:
a) every part you could think of has probably already been discussed if you don't mind using the search feature to dig a bit.
b) none of the currently available bolt-on parts are going to do as much as the headers and exhaust you already installed.

Unfortunately when dealing with TPI, short of replacing everything, you're just changing one or two parts of a well balanced system. Those one or two parts aren't going to do much when everything else is still optimized for the old run characteristic. That's my anyway... You could do roller rockers (may or may not bolt on without mods) or a cam (see previous disclaimer), or large tube runners, or a base, etc and it's probably not going to do much. A big cam and high flowing heads are going to be stifled by the stock intake... So where do you turn for a good return on your investment?

Nitrous oxide. PS, nitrous + TPI torque = some pretty crazy burnouts. Without traction mods it's probably not going to be all that effective.

Yeah, I don't know man... I have enough traction problems on dry pavement without the nitrous... so... yeah.

I'd say fuel pressure regulator, I got the holley version, going on 11 years with no problem, then again, I put 500 miles a year on the car.

Not even close... 2 year old Comp T/As with maybe 3k miles on them. Maybe instead of trying to figure out why my tires spin, we should be trying to figure out why yours don't?

Something has to be wrong if you're talking about a 150hp shot, on a healthy L98, getting traction on one wheel peel. That recipe should be good for spinning through 4th gear...

Drew I've been holding this lil jab but can't hold it anymore..
You must be running Gatorbacks because every other tire has waaaaay better traction and wouldn't spin like that!!!!! lmao

Re: Best upgrade for a 91 model L98 TPI

I wish I'd had the forethought to go back and photo the burnouts from the first couple weeks while it still had Goodyear tires... They were blocks long and hilarious.

I've always had traction issues with my Formula, but only when really trying. Under normal driving conditions the Goodyear tires were absolutely the worst. Even still, with good tires, burned rubber seems to follow the car like a shadow.

I've had plenty of sticky tires on the car... But Goodyears were the worst

FWIW, 89-92 L98s are markedly faster then earlier MAF L98s. That's why they're typically 5/10ths to a full second faster in the 1/4 mile. If my L98 87 Iroc went up against my L98 91 Formula, it would get stomped like it was tied to a tree. That's with two equally optioned cars even. Take an 88 L98 with single cat and 2.77 gears and it'd be even worse.

Re: Best upgrade for a 91 model L98 TPI

Best upgrade for a L98? Ditch the TPI. Get a good exhaust. Upgrade the heads and a cam that fits your driving preferences. Then follow it up with Gears and a tranny beef up with a converter. I am not gonna name parts since everyone is not the same. Some want a quick light to light car and others want a fast 1/4 car. Find out what others have done for their goals which are similar to yours and look into what they went with.

I personally like doing the suspension first then bolt ons then seeing if its worth it even putting time into a L98 for what your goals are.

Like others have said this has been talked over and over again. Search for threads.

Re: Best upgrade for a 91 model L98 TPI

I love this thread.

This thread is now a burn out pic thread... Since the OP is long gone, and the question can be answered by searching, and so on.

Did I mention my 87 Iroc is slow? This was a 45 second brake stand, compared to the pics I posted earlier of just rolling into the throttle in my Formula.

Best upgrade. Heads, Cam, Intake. Same applies to most cars.

Re: Best upgrade for a 91 model L98 TPI

this is that guy xflgkingpin with the car he called rocky. He made several topics about getting pulled over for "dwb". Got banned a couple times. Funny thing is he wrecked his car breaking traction on the freeway. Believe they used the jaws of life to remove him from the poor iroc. There is a happy ending to this story however. He did bring rocky back to life and continues to grace the tech boards that is TGO with his presence.

Rock on, Pat.

No us mods are not asleep, we have lives outside thirdgen.org that causes us not to be online 24 hours a day 7 days a week, however since this thread has gone downhill rapidly it will be closed.
