87 IROC-Z 305 TPI upgrade
hi im trying to look for upgrades for my Iroc Z 305 5speed because im trying to build my car to race my brother on the track.
My bro has an 86 Mustang GT Foxbody with a 302, E303 cam(dont know the lobe lift or cam degree) and 4.10:1 ring an pinion.
i was wondering if there was any good upgrades that anyone can recommend?
cams, heads, Ring and Pinion, Etc.
thanks

The cam in my signature will work very well, and you could get your heads ported and upgraded for added valve-lift.
There is also info in my signature links for upgrading to LS1 valves & beehive springs.
Exhaust upgrades: stainless headers, Y-pipe and cat-back system are always good for a very significant increase in power.
TPI really doesn't respond well enough to rear-gear upgrades to make it worth the trouble, unless you get the gears cheap and do the install yourself. With a manual trans too much gear could create more of a problem in a drag race.
Do a search on this forum for modifications to the factory camaro Y-tube intake air duct & air filter boxes.

I would recommend 3.73 gears and the Crane 2032 cam. Great combo and a lot of people run it. Requires no special ECM tuning.
This cam works great in 305 and 350 cars. http://crane.carshopinc.com/product_...d/15861/104224

Re: 87 IROC-Z 305 TPI upgrade
.. What E.T. and MPH your brother running? What's Your's? Which rear end ratio?
.. As 305sbc mentioned, headers and at least 3" maintube exhaust/mufflers is the starting point... along with freeflowing aircleaner setup...
.. The stock TPI setup works better on the 305 engine than it does on larger engines...
.. A more modern super strong roller cam is the GM #12370845 214/224 .488/.509 valve lift LSA 112 (also has fuel pump eccentric for carb.'d engines)

Re: 87 IROC-Z 305 TPI upgrade
.. Naw, that new GM cam is just a modernized version of the Crane cam... same tuning, just more lift for more torque by 4500 RPMs on a TPI engine... just needs some good Z28 valve springs... will also work for carb.'d engines, as well...

.. No headers? Your bro's Mustang might be running 16's at 85 MPH or 12's at 115 MPH... gotta kinda know what you're up against...
