L98 starting and idleing problems.

Well the car I just bought always had a fluctuating idle. from like 500 to 750 or around about. If you start the car a few times back to back the coil loses its spark. I rode the car a little this evening and when I pulled in the driveway after a 10 minute tride it wouldn't start back. I got out unhooked the coil wire and I then had fire. Put the coil wire back on and it fired right up. the coil, cap, and rotor are new and I had the module tested. I had him test it 6 times in a row so it would get hot and it passed everytime. Is it possible its the pick up coil?

Re: L98 starting and idleing problems.

Also when I removed the module there wasn't any grease on the bottom of it.

Re: L98 starting and idleing problems.

To check pick-up coil. Using an ohmmeter Check for continuity between each of the pick up coil connecter terminals and the distributor body. If continuity is indicated, the pick-up coil is shorted to ground-replace the pick-up coil.
Measure the resistance across the two terminals of the pick-up coil connector resistance should read between 500 and 1500 ohms. Flex the pick-up coil leads and see if the resistance changes. If the resistance is not as specified, replace pick up coil.
When my pick up coil failed the car was idling in driveway (lucky me) and it stalled. I had no spark at all and it never re-started. It wasn't really a hit and miss thing for me. I checked the ignition coil and ICM. They checked out fine. When I tested the pick-up coil it failed the resistance test (showed no resistance). I replaced the ICM and the pick-up coil. The only reason I replaced both is because they were both 20 years old a little corroded and i had the distributor apart. After pulling the old pick-up coil out of distributor, the coil looked fine but where the pick-up coil connector wires connected to the copper windings of the pick-up coil corrosion existed and is why there was a lack of resistance between the two pick-up coil connection terminals. Put everything back together and it fired right up.
