I NEED HELP with my 90-92 TPI

Ok so I have a 1982 CJ7 with a 79 350 with 90-92 TPI. I have been chasing an issue and well after not finding any codes and spending lots of money I contacted Howell and they thought my ECM was bad so they exchanged it. While I was waiting for the new ecm I had the plenum off because I was checking the egr and that's fine although Howell flashed the ECM to take all the smog off. I got my ECM back and thought I had everything hooked back up and tighten down well I started it up and I was like sweet the ECM swap fixed it but the idle was too high I was looking things over and realized the 4bolts on the drivers side of the plenum was not tight so I tighten them back down and well the original symptoms showed back up so the ECM swap did nothing . My symptoms are as follows after the 4th time of trying to start it it may fire up. I can start it on the 1st turn if I give it throttle it will start and run ruff may or may run on idle and may or may not be able take it out of park. The funny thing is I get it into gear I can sit their and spin the tires no problem so no lack of power ! If your having problems under standing my ramblings feel free to call me 906 204-2098 Chad. I do have video Ill post later .

You had a big vac leak ; surprised you could not hear the sucking

Appears to running rich ;
the vac leak let in extra air to dilute the rich ( too much fuel ) mixture and make it run right

Another sure sign you are too rich ;
putting your foot on the throttle while cranking over shuts off the fuel to engine so it starts
on whatever fuel is already lying in the intake .
The fact it does starts up shows there is plenty of fuel there ( where it should not be ) without any coming from the injectors as it should

Who old are injectors;
done any leakdown tests to see if fuel leaking out while engine stopped?

Re: I NEED HELP with my 90-92 TPI

Well the Idle was so high I could no hear anything! Is it normal for a inline pump to drain back I noticed that ever sense I bought this that you can tell when the pump is filling back up. How do I perform a leak down test? The injectors have been tested and they are at optimal performance. Yea I'd have to say it is running rich also Even with my 2 car garage doors open and all the windows my eyes start to burn right away!

Re: I NEED HELP with my 90-92 TPI

Ok so I guess the video does not work as well as I hoped it would.... Best way to discribe my problem is it sits over night I go to start it and 1st turn no start 2nd starts then quits 3rd might stay running if it does then it will sit and Idle for 5,10 15, maybe even an hour and while Idling smooth then surge almost quit then come back too then smooth then surge ect I pulled the TPS while running and it dont surge maybe a little bit of a ruff Idle. I know the IAC is working because I can here it change once the engine warms up. I was told the injectors all check out good... The engine ran awesome for the 1st 3 mo after I bought the Vehicle parked it for the winter spring came around drove it another 2mo then started having this problem and have owned this for 5 1/2 yrs . O I have checked for vacuum leaks and found nothing.

Back to basics; pull the codes and see if anything is showing
Check fuel pressure at fuel rail

Re: I NEED HELP with my 90-92 TPI

Codes have been ran nothing shows. Smog was flashed off. The fuel pressure is great. New TPS is still sitting at parts store.

So I just wanted to take my ride around the block today and found out I went through 10 gal of gas with it Idling on and off yesterday in less than 3hrs.

Ok so as much as Id like to get this worked out. I was wonding with the block being a 1979 block could I pull the TPI off and just put a carb and a intake on with out anything extra besides the gaskets?

Re: I NEED HELP with my 90-92 TPI

I know this is kind of off topic but I can't seem to find a thread for my question. I have an engine squeak but I just bought a new belt. I also have a curious little switch below the dash, under the steering wheel. Any suggestions?

Re: I NEED HELP with my 90-92 TPI

Sounds like your IAC (Idle air control) took a crap. It leaks air past the throttle body at idle and is controlled by the ECM
