TPI Harness questions!
Hello, I have an 86 IROC with a TPI 355. The Tpi harness has been hacked up and Im having a hard time diagnosing my poor idle and drivability when I get the engine into closed loop. I get an occasional code 51, and an occasional code 33. Anyway, I would love to replace the whole harness and start fresh. Have any of you installed a painless harness or a fuel injection connection harness in a third gen?? Any major issues? Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Re: TPI Harness questions!
Be aware aftermarket harness is only for engine management so you still need other wiring for gauges and extras like A/c , lights , etc
I have 2 fuel injection connection MAP harnesses in retro fit cars and they work nice

Yes the Painless is great with good instructions but as Vettoz said, "only for engine management" so that means you will need to retrofit the painless through the firewall and that will not be fun. You will also need to somehow get the other stuff from your stock harness to work with the Painless.

Re: TPI Harness questions!
Thanks for the replies. I would love to just find an 86 tpi camaro harness in good shape, but they are not readily available. I was looking at a Howell harness, and it looked nice. It looks like they offer an extra long harness, so maybe I wouldnt have to go through the firewall. I could run it thruogh the fender like the original. I think I may get it, hoping that hooking it up to my other systems wont be a huge headache... If anyone has done this, and has any tips to save me some time and money that would be great.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Re: TPI Harness questions!
Painless is anything but painless. I installed one for an 86 TPI T/A and had to extend every connector to allow it to reach the ECM under the "glovebox".
Re: TPI Harness questions!
They come in two different lengths, stock and extended. I had no problems with either. Use the extended if you want the ECM in non-stock position. I have not had to extend any connectors. But that is just my experience.

Re: TPI Harness questions!
Most even make special note of that fact
Easier to relocate the ECM to suit harness than to have to rewire it
or make a new hole through the firewall closer to ECM so plugs reach.
Not as if you are devaluing the car seeing you have fitted a non stock harness anyway
