TPI HELP!

I have an 89 5.7l car that was running great and now barely runs at all. It will start and run extremely rough. If I shut it off, it will not sputter or start. Wen it does run, It is extremely rich and also it throws no codes. Any advice?

Re: TPI HELP!

My 85 Cadillac DeVille did that. Was running great one minute and the next minute it was almost dead. I had to nurse it home 20 miles. Turned out to be the ECM went bad. Hope your Ecm is ok.

Re: TPI HELP!

mcsslover1987, Thanks for the reply. Is there an easy way to test the ecm in that car? I did install a hypertech chip in the computer years ago. Could that be faulty? This is the one area i'm not real useful in. I checked the resistance in my tps and iac and they are both functioning properly with a voltmeter. I replaced the distributor because it was original. I changed the coil to an MSD. I was going to pull the plug wires and check them for ohms. I did a bunch of research last night and I keep going back to maybe the ECM being bad, never mentioned it in my thread, and you brought it up as well. I drove the car one day to work last year to work and got it inspected. When they finished the inspection, I went to start it and it cranked but got nothing. It finally started later that day. It was breaking up and then dies about a mile down the road. I had to trailer it home. Been goofing around with it ever since. I have no Service light on while it runs and no codes. I've had this car for 12 years and never had a problem. I did replace other items... Fuel pump, plugs, intake temp sensor, etc. If I let the car sit, It will eventually start but runs rough and misses. If I shut it off and try to restart, it will just crank over with the starter. Any replies much appreciated!

Re: TPI HELP!

Just to add.. I drive this car about 1000-2000 miles per year. It has 84k on it and sits in a steel building with a concrete floor. In absolutely awesome condition.

Did you check the fuel pump relay and the injectors?

Re: TPI HELP!

Mongoose, thanks for your reply! I did actually replace the fuel pump relay and I'm glad you brought that up. I pulled the car outside the one time and let it run for about twenty minutes. When I pulled it in, I shut it off but the fuel pump kept on running. I had to pull the battery cable. After reconnecting the cable a couple hours later, it was fine. I still replaced the relay thinking maybe that was my issue but it happened one other time after that. It seemed to happen when it was damp out. I did pull the injectors and they all did spray and none of them seemed to be leaking.

Re: TPI HELP!

you might want to check the ohm on the injectors when they are cold and hot.

Re: TPI HELP!

Anything less than 12ohm should be replaced...indicative of coil failure. The coils
on the injectors cannot be repaired.

Re: TPI HELP!

Finally! I feel kind of ignorant, but I have learned so much from all of you. I did a cold ohm check on my injectors and finally think i got results I'm looking for. #1 16ohms #2 2ohms #3 14ohms #4 13ohms #5 12ohms #6 16ohms #7 14ohms #8 14ohms. I had to check #2 5 times because I didn't believe I got the results but was consistently 2 ohms. Southba08, We need to talk about injectors don't we?

Re: TPI HELP!

Sounds like my situation after my TPI swap...3 of my injectors turned out to be bad so in went a set of Bosch 3 injectors and no problems since.

Re: TPI HELP!

I put a set of Bosch III's that had been rebuilt by John at FIC in my c4. I had a noticable improvement and consider it money well spent.

Re: TPI HELP!

It is nice to have some direction for a change. Could have sworn that I tested these things before but must not have had the ohm setting right. This time I went to the lowest setting and it read perfectly. I have about $350 into this thing already but consider it money well spent because it is all maintenance items in a way. I did find some faulty and worn out parts along the way. I'm not crazy after all! I will get injectors and repost after install.

That exact problem happened to my Z28 last year, my injectors were reading just like yours. New set and you're good to go.

Re: TPI HELP!

Installed 8 brand new 22lb Bosch injectors and the problem is solved! Car runs excellent once again. Hit it with the timing light and a quick oil change and away we go! THank you again to everyone who lent me a helping hand especially South Bay! Couldn't have been so successful so quickly without all your help
