Is there a cam possible.
I have a 88 305 LB9 TPI, 3.73 gears, headers, exhaust. I want to put a cam in my car, it has MAF and the stock PROM. I would like a cam that i could just slide right in, use with my stock heads (60,000 miles on them), and not need a tune and see a power increase between 1000-4500 RPMs. Please dont tell me to go get my heads done or get new springs, if i need to i wont touch the cam. My timing chain cover is leaking i need to replace the seal, a little more work and i can put the cam in. To recap, I want a cam that i can use with my vehicle, without touching my heads, and without tuning the computer, stock lifters, stock rods, stock rocker arms. Any cams like this out there, if so could someone help me with the numbers, lift duration that i can look for that will fit me.

Re: Is there a cam possible.
5 speed or auto?
If 5 speed the 305 cam is not bad.
also if you have the 081 heads those are good too.
The stock cam just don"t have much lift and that is why you want a roller cam anyway.
Call comp cams help line and if you need to change the spring you can do it with the engine in the car. cheers

If you're changing the timing cover gasket, sure, put a cam in it. You can reuse the stock roller lifters, but you should change the valve springs just due to age. I had the following cam put into a 305 during a rebuild, and I'm happy with it. It's faily mild so it idles nice:

What are your goals with the car? Do you have to do any emissions testing? Are you going to leave the rest of the motor alone or are you going to make other changes to the car?

Re: Is there a cam possible.
I have NO emissions testing at all in my state for my year, my goal is to gain a little horsepower and gain some torque. My main goal is to put a cam in it with requires absolutely no computer tune.

This is a listing of some of the cams for the LB9 and L98 engines. The last two cams on the page would work best with some computer tuning as well.
If your car has the LB9/auto trans cam an upgrade that would require no computer changes is the stock LB9/G92/5-speed cam. This was also the cam that was installed in the L98 as well.
A lot of people are also running the ZZ4 cam.
Your car will run fine with a mild cam shaft that does not have too many variations from the stock L98 cam though. Aside from using one of the stock cams for our cars, computer tuning would yield the best performance outcome for your specific combination.

Re: Is there a cam possible.
Oh, I forgot to mention. When looking at the stock L98 & LB9/G92/5-speed cams - look at ones with the '88-'92 specs. Those have a little more intake and exhaust valve lift compaired to the '87 L98 cam. Although any of the '87 L98 and '87 LB9/G92/5-speed cams would be an upgrade over the stock LB9/automatic combination cam.

Re: Is there a cam possible.
Mostly stock, only changes are mild intake porting cam listed and 3" exhaust. No tuning. Car runs great, has more power and sounds better than stock. This cam is not for all out power, but it's a nice improvement. Also a 5 speed, 3.45 axle.
You can change the springs in the car. Pressurize the cylinder with air through the spark plug hole to hold the valve up, and you can compress the spring for removal. There are detailed writeups on this site on how to do this.

Re: Is there a cam possible.
if you're gonna swap the cam do it right, you can't use the LT4 cam with stock heads either. you need bee hive springs or the heads milled for the dual spring or you will hit the retainer. The stock LT1 cam is decent and can be had for around $50. I have a 91' L98 cam sitting in my garage if you're interested.

Re: Is there a cam possible.
What are the specs on your L98 and specs on the lt1? And they can both be used with stock lifters, stock springs, stock rods and all?

Re: Is there a cam possible.
In 1988 ( i used 88 because my ECM and TPI system are from an 88) a 5speed car came stock 220 horse, this was because of the cam correct? So if i install this cam even though it isnt big it still has a little more lift than a 5speed cam and needs no tuning or other add ons. so with that cam wont i at least see that 25hp increase? please correct me if im wrong
