Broken Rings, rebuild time?!?!

Well after my 89 GTA sitting at my buddys garage, he finally got to look at my car. I was having a major issue with oil blow by and even spitting out of the dipstick. He started doing a compression test and found one cylinder at 0 psi and another at 70 psi. he says i have broken rings, and gave me the option to either have him maybe re-ring, then who knows what else could be wrong. Or time for a rebuild. Im leaning towards the rebuild.

My question is does anyone know of a stock ring and gasket kit if i went with just re-ringing. Or maybe even know the stock ring size i need.

Or Option 2, does anyone know where i could get a cheaply priced rebuild kit. Something that would be almost stock so i dont have to go too nuts getting the block machined.

Or last option 3, go all out and build a 383 stroker TPI. Currently it is my Knight Rider project with a stock 5.7 TPI.

Any input would be great, thanks guys.

Sounds like time for a rebuild, and be sure to have the block checked.

Re: Broken Rings, rebuild time?!?!

Stock ring size is 5/64 top ring, 5/64 second ring, 3/16 oil ring. I have seen ring failures due to failed injectors(cylinder run lean). If you are going to redo this motor, be sure to have your injectors checked and or replaced. Of course have the block checked as suggested. As far as block machining goes, I would suggest that you at least have the cylinders cleaned up, which may mean as much as an .030 overbore, depending on the extent of the wear/damage.

Re: Broken Rings, rebuild time?!?!

Thanks for the input fellas. I did have really good Bosch design III injectors installed that I bought from fuel injector connection. After the car sitting a bit I had an issue with one or two stuck open injectors, which they replaced with a full set no charge. I sure hope I'm not having an injector issue again.

Re: Broken Rings, rebuild time?!?!

There has to be something majorly wrong to yield 0 PSI of compression. Even a bare piston in the bore with no rings will yield some PSI.

Re: Broken Rings, rebuild time?!?!

That's a good point. I totally overlooked that. I have seen a few engines with broken rings that yielded an almost total power loss on the cylinder and still showed 60-70 psi. Zero compression almost has to be a stuck open or broken valve. Unless the piston has a large hole in it.
