86 TA 305 TPI mods/build
Hello, I've been reading for about a month but have a couple questions and some advise is needed. I don't want to put a lot of money it either but it needs some *****...lol.
Here is what I'm adding/changing....
Edelbrock base and runners
Adjustable fuel pressure regulator
22# injectors 4 hole type
Pulled off the A.I.R. stuff and pump.
Shorty Headers 1 5/8 prim 3" collector
Making custom Y-pipe 2.5" pipes into a 3"
High flow cat 3"
Exhaust 3.5" after cat
I will port match everything
Will add a tune...was thinking PCMforless and them learning prom burning
It has the stock gears, will change at some point to 3.42 or 3.73.
Adding a little stall is not out of the question either.
After seeing all the black crap inside the intake/plenum thinking about blocking off the EGR and comp for it in the ECM.
I have the 416 heads, would it be worth it to put on a set of 601's?
Also trying to figure out the cam, need to stay with a flat tappet.
Comp cams suggested the EX256....I was leaning toward the 268
This is not a daily driver, has had maybe 500 miles on it in last 10 years. Don't need to worry about emissions inspection or mileage etc...etc...

Re: 86 TA 305 TPI mods/build
If your gonna add all that horse power, I would consider a good brand radiator because removing the EGR will increase the chances of running the engine hotter. EGR helps keep the upper cylinder temps down. Not very many people know about that. I would also recommend an all around roller valve train, Roller Rockers, Roller Lifters, and Roller Cam. Just these items help keep the engine oil cooler.

Plus add a few HP due to reduced friction.

Re: 86 TA 305 TPI mods/build
Hi, yea I understand there is a small cylinder temp difference without it. Years ago when I built poncho 400's and 455's we always yanked the EGR. Don't recall any cooling problems with stock radiators, 12:1 and well over 400hp, but they were 4 core's. Something to watch though. I have a 180 stat and will be changing the fan temps as well, EGR delete.
A roller cam would be sweet but its big $$$ going to a retrofit roller on an 86. I'm thinking roller tip rockers down the road

Regarding the heads, I will be going with the 601's for ~$500. The are remans ready to run and come with the bigger 1.94 stainless valves, guide plates, screw in studs and z/28 springs.
Would welcome some input on the Cam selection.
