'89 Camaro RS v6, intermittantly dies at idle and engine code 34
I looked around the forum and elsewhere and couldn't find the answer to this, but please forgive me if I just missed it. Or if it's in the wrong section...
So I have an '89 Camaro ~97k actual miles (I believe its never rolled over but i could be wrong) Recently it had started dying sometimes when I came to a stop. After some searching I cleaned the little flap on the throttle body behind the air duct and put injector cleaner in my gas. This seemed to fix it for awhile, though I still had the check engine light like always. Well last night the car was running fine and I parked for a few minutes and when I started it back up it immediately died. I got it home by keeping a little gas going to it whenever i pushed in the clutch. When it died I just started it back up and kept going. So this morning I went and checked the throttle body again and it looked fine. Started it up and it idled fine. Then I tried the jumper wire again to get the engine codes and this time it worked (couldn't get it to work the last time i tried it.) I gave me error 22 and 34, just to be sure i disconnected the battery to clear the codes, reconnected it and fired it up again. Once again no problem with idle. This time just error 34. Maybe it only dies when hot?
So error 34 is a maf error so could the sensor be dead or dirty? Could I just take it out and look and be able to tell? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Take off the maf and clean it with maf cleaner and try again.

Check engine light??? Do you know how to do the paperclip trick to see what code its throwing??
If not read through this and you should know what to look at as for the check engine light.

yeah it's throwing code 34, a maf sensor issue. I found a visor that shows how to check it and I'm gonna try it tomorrow.

so I've replaced the maf sensor, it was under warranty from the previous owner.unfortunately the check engine light is still on so I'm going to look at the wires and make sure they're not shorting and see if I can also check the voltage getting to it, I think it should be 5 volts...
on a positive note it hasn't been dying so that's good

Re: '89 Camaro RS v6, intermittantly dies at idle and engine code 34
so as far as I can tell the wires are not frayed or shorting. I checked again and I got codes 33 and 34, low and high voltage/air pressure at the maf sensor. I tested the voltage coming from the center wire on the maf plug and it's 4.5 volts. I'm not really sure if that's correct or not. I saw one thing somewhere that said there should be 5 volts going to the maf and another saying something about .5 volts at idle and 4.5 when the throttles fully open. I'm not really sure which it should be...

so while replacing one of the exhaust gaskets I noticed a broken connector on the side of the engine and I'm not sure what it is but maybe its related to my other problems? I tried to get good pictured of both sides but well...
Any idea what this is? How to replace it?

that connector looks like a knock sensor connector which ur 89 will not have , or a plug for a tempsensor
.5-.45/5v is for the tps
the maf should have 5 volts on the refrence wire but 4.5 may be acceptable im not sur eon that
were did u get the maf sensor from was it new or a used one, if it was used go get anew one , if it was new exchange it for another , i have goten brand new maf sensors that were bad out of the box before
more then likley ur aic is dirty , take the throttle body off and clean it out really well with carb cleaner or brakekleen

Re: '89 Camaro RS v6, intermittantly dies at idle and engine code 34
it was a refurb from oreilly auto parts because its under warrenty from the previous owner the old one was also a refurb and had only been in there a few months... Do you know where the other end of the maf plug goes so I can check that end and possibly figure out if there's some sort of short in the cable? I suppose I could try changing the maf again as it would only cost me some time...
I cleaned the little flap in the throttle body (the throttle itself? idk) is what you're talking about behind the whole throttle body? Looks like I know what I'm doing tomorrow after school haha thanks for the help

Re: '89 Camaro RS v6, intermittantly dies at idle and engine code 34
After all that time and money and me nearly going insane it was just the maf sensor relay, a $10 part. Well I'm glad it's done now, time to move on to other problems it has haha
PS anyway to edit the title to show that this has been solved?
