Looking for prices on options
Looking for prices on options
I had posted on here earlier about my motor that was swamped by hurricane sandy. As i continue to wait till it warms up enough to attempt to tear the motor down and assess damages, i still keep in mind the possibility that it may have to be 100% rebuilt....again. Keeping this in mind, i've began to think of the option of a 383 Stroker kit, does anyone know how much this costs? I was going to do a cam and i think 383 + Cam may be a lot of power for a weekend car (which i wont mind) but have also thought of a 355 too...cost is the basis for any decision....does anyone know how much either costs?

It varies, but I would opt for 6" rods if you're going for the 383. Gobs of Torque. But if the motor is sealed and the hood was closed...well, I wasn't there, but I feel for you. Hope you're alright.
For not that much more money, the 383 makes a lot more power. Your problem will be the intake.
Here are some of the power numbers you can expect with a 383 using various TPI Intakes.

This was with a big *** cam.

Re: Looking for prices on options
Thanks nelz, I was thinking of having a machine shop do all the work for me on this project if i do it basically, i guess im looking in the $1500-2000 range then?
and the motor wasnt in the car when it got flooded, but it also had no oil and was basically all opened up. My T/A was fine though, and im still rockin the 305 in it.
also, do you know how much power / money it looks like for a 355?

Depending on your setup I had almost a $1500 shop bill (had them provide me the balancer and flexplate). That was all the normal stuff, tank and flux, align bore and hone, check for flatness, inspect heads and verify valve springs, internal balance, new cam bearings, and etc.
Downside of going 6" rod is the pin moves pretty close to the ring.
You could go play with www.camquest.com you could probably see the differences some.
Main things that will make the power are the top end (intake, heads, and camshaft).
Either way should take some intake upgrades and ecm tuning. Even with a 350 TPI ecm the stock injectors are only 22 lb.

Machine shop bill usually about the same. (It's labour.) You just save money because you can use the stock 350 stuff. Although I would consider upgrading the rods-but then, you probably won't need to as you're not putting down enough power and the motor doesn't rev past 6000 anyways. Best I've seen using the stock L98 is around 350hp, 400 ft. lbs of torque. Best magazine build I've seen was a 6" rod Vortec head TPI making about 420hp. (Something new, something old. http://www.gmhightechperformance.com...k/viewall.html)
Thus for a little bit more money, you should be able to get around 420-450HP with the 383 and mild cam. But yea, you'll need to change injectors and programming. It just adds up.

thanks for all the info guys....I've always been a car guy my whole life, but unfortunately i have yet to delve too deep into engines so everything is like speaking a foreign language still lol. But yeah, i see how it'll all add up, i think i'll just continue hoping the 350 will be fine and stick with putting in a mild cam and eventually upgrading intake components lol
thanks again guys
