about to go carb.

Ok so heres the deal. I bought a 91rs with a tpi engine. The guy I got it from told me it was a 355, however so guys I run around with claims to know the motor as being a 383. So now to the issues. I have no ideal what I have. Im getting a real strong smell of gas from the exhaust and a miss fire, till the car is good and warm everything goes away. Changed the fpr because we couldn't get the old to go less than 60 psi. the new one reads 45 to 50. changed all the sensors to new. Still same prob. smokes and strong smell of fuel. Do you think if the computer was tuned for a 383 and I have a 355 whould I need to change the tune. And last can someone tell me what to buy to see my tune and change if needed Sorry for so much info on one post but I am at wits end. Thankyou in advance. By the way im in Salisbury md who knows of a great shop to take the car to, to help resolve these issues

Re: about to go carb.

Does it have a lumpy cam in it? If so have you checked to see what kind of vacuum you are making at idle? And have you checked the injectors to see if you a bad one or two?

Re: about to go carb.

injectors are good 14.8 ohms on all of them. about to check for vacuum leaks, but would that cause a miss fire??

Re: about to go carb.

seems to be no vacuum leaks did the propane method, don't have a gauge no change in motor. I really want to keep the tpi but because im such a newby carb setup would so much easier.

Re: about to go carb.

Without knowing what the displacement is, the cam is, there is no way to know what it needs.

Yes, it may need a tune. But without knowing whats in the engine, it will be hard to say what it needs.

Start at the basics. Have you set the base timing? How about the IAC?

Re: about to go carb.

Well it sounds like you might need to start back probing the ecm harness. Not really that hard to do. The obd1 setup doesnt give you much info at all but you should be getting at least 12 letting you know it is working. Have you just jumped the a and b pins to see if the check engine light flashs.

Re: about to go carb.

it does flash but only once and then just stays on, I did unplug the ecm turned the key on and got no light at all. Plugged it back in and did get a light with just one blink and then it just stays on, sorry I just said that twice my brain is shot

Re: about to go carb.

Well with A and B jumped the fans should come on and the fuel pump none stop if i am not mistaken. Not 100% on the fuel pump without going to my car. But the fan/fans should being running while in test mode. This is also when you can adjust your IAC the right way.

Re: about to go carb.

fans are wired direct with a switch, I may have misspoken in my last post I did not use a scan tool but a code reader.

Re: about to go carb.

What injectors are in it? Get all the info then have a chip burned. You really need a custom chip burned. As far as the rich smell, new cats will kill that smell.
