No oil pressure til restart engine
I was driving my 85 TA 5.0tpi today and all was good. until about 15mins into the drive oil pressure on stock gauge dropped to 0. I pulled over and heard no odd sounds and checked to see if i had oil and it was ok. went home and shut the car off. within 5 minutes restarted it and normal pressure. waited 3 hours and normal pressure again. not sure where to start with this. all other gauges are fine. except temp. as i put in a mechanical unit.

How do you know the gauge is working correctly.
All it takes is a bad / loose wire to give the situation you have
Only way to confirm what is actually happening is to temp install a mech OP gauge

Good point. I just assume it was ok as it always seemed accurate and didn't bounce or anything odd when it quit. then just worked fine at a restart. I figured if it was bad it would just quit all together. But I thuink youre right to be sure and at least eliminate that. Thanks a lot

Re: No oil pressure til restart engine
I have a 92 blazer and the oil pressure would go almost to 0 sometimes. I fixed it by removing the dash cluster and cleaning the connector, re-installed it and now it is fine. Free fix, just took some time to disassemble the dash.

Re: No oil pressure til restart engine
This happened to me. I was about 2 miles from home when I noticed that I had no oil pressure. Even though I heard no rattles, knocks or any other noise coming from the engine, I immediately pulled into a parking lot and shut it off. I got out and checked oil level, which was fine. After not finding anything and knowing that I had a full oil pan, I started it up and it showed full oil pressure. I drove it home and while checking it out, found a little oil leakage on the sending unit. I replaced that sensor and have not had a repeat of the problem in over 3,000 miles.

I would guess sensor issue if all else is good. You can verify with a mechanical gauge if you are worried. Those senders tend to fail or leak or have a mind of their own after a while.
You'd know pretty quick if you really had zero oil pressure. Probably would hear some fun noises, feel the engine get sluggish, and eventually you'd have some knocking. Wouldnt take too long.
