305 TBI to TPI swap/rebuild questions
Hi been a long time since I was in here. So I've come into a situation that I may be able to do some much needed changes and maintenance to my 92 Camaro RS. I'm about to graduate nursing school and my dad wants to do something cool with me and I of course thought lets work on my car!
So my start point is a bone stock 305 TBI engine in a 92 Camaro, pitiful I know. I also live in California, and would prefer not to have to swap my entire engine around every 2 years so I need my build to at least look like its legal for smog.
What I want to do is swap the TBI for TPI, (I've come to understand I need a speed density plenum yes?) swap in a cam, rewire the harness myself seeing as so many posts say it's pretty much a snap. Since I'm that far in the engine anyways and it has ooooooohhhhhh 200k miles on it, I figure the old girl can use a rebuild while I'm at it.
Have a 1000(ish) to work with. Here are my questions:
1a What cam for these level of mods can I run? I know TPIs are low RPM torque machines which is what I want.
1b What mods need to be done with whatever cam you answered 1a with?
2 How much does getting a port job cost for the heads?
3a What's a fair price for a used TPI with the trimmings cost? I've been seein between 150-250 for complete set ups on Ebay.
3b Where would be best to look? Ebay? Junk yard?
4 I know jack about computers or tuning, so what in the hell do I need there? I know I need a new ECM but is there anything else? Will this work?
