Is a TPI or TBI fuel pump the same Part? Best way to drop the tank?
Is a TPI or TBI fuel pump the same Part? Best way to drop the tank?
Hey guys. I own a 88' Camaro IROC-Z 5.7L that I just finished putting in some new fuel injectors from South Bay FI (Bosch 3's. They are fantastic BTW). But my fuel pump has died (it is for sure the pump, yes, pressure tested and the relay is working fine and pump was whining). So I need a new one. Just Checking prices, saw a Delco one at RockAuto for 60 bucks (seems reasonable) but there is no information saying its a TBI or TPI setup. I know there is some heated debate about them being the same, I actually believe they are, but just in case I am wrong is there anyone out there who has used the AC Delco pump EP241 or 25116163 in their TPI car? Or is there a different part number I should be looking for. Maybe even some proof, like a screen shot from a GM Illustrated Parts Catalogue if possible?
As well, could someone point me in the direction to best drop the fuel tank? I searched for a thread on "how to drop the fuel tank" and found a couple of dead links, but it appeared some one must have published a "how to drop the tank" with some photos (never really read the articles, just looked at the pictures in my magazines
) I am working with a couple of jackstands on a driveway, no hoist for this guy. Thank you very much!

Th fuel pumps are different. Is your engine stock? If not then get a fuel pump for a Grand National or Cyclone,Typhoon truck. All 3 will work good for you. There's not short cut to replace the fuel pump.
Drop the rearend, disconnect the fuel lines, brake lines, rear exhaust, the shield then the tank. When taking out the tank, turn it about 180*. It should fall on out. For a first timer, it should take about 5 hours. If you're good like me, 1 1/2hours. I use air tools.

No, you don't have to remove the rear end, just lower it way down. Take off the lower shock bolts, lower it down and the springs will fall out by themselves. Remove the hold-down bolt on the center flex line and you will be able to drop the axle WAYYYY down so you can get the tank out.
Before you start, make sure you get the back of the car way high on jackstands and support it in by the pads just in front of the rear lower control arms.

Just for clarification, because I didnt read a definitive answer.. TBI fuel pumps
will NOT work for a MPFI engine, the PSI rating of those pumps will not support
a TPI car. Like Vincent said though, the Grand Nationals and the like are MPFI
V6 cars that have a pump that can provide the 45-50psi to the fuel rail.

You can cut a fuel pump access door in the back deck. However it's dangerous and you may end up with metal fuel lines to cut to be able to pull the unit out of the tank.

Don't forget that you also have to remove the fuel filler door, because you need the space around the fuel filler door hole free to wiggle the filler neck out.
