my 85 tpi pinging very bad

ok the car has 173,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. no mods whatsoever. it starts and runs like new has plenty of power but pings like crazy. it is not driven very often at all but i do start it and let it run every so often. it has no hesitation upon acceleration. i have not driven it because of this problem i am ready to drive it. it does have a new o2 sensor plugs and wires and i replaced the maf with one off the auction place. my maf went bad car would not run unless it was disconnected. like i said the car can sit for a long time it fires right up runs great but pings or detonates bad.
suggestions everyone.

Re: my 85 tpi pinging very bad

present day gas is not good with sitting. it just pain goes bad. it may have real octane in the low 80's. If the tank is low you might just drive it easy to a gas station. Try to fill it up with the highest grade Chevron available locally.

If there's 1/4 tank or more in it you can use the fuel pump test function and a hose connected to the fuel pressure port on the rail to pump the tank empty. Obviously you'll need to have 5 gal containers handy.

DO you know how old the gas in the tank is?

Re: my 85 tpi pinging very bad

I replaced 4 spark plug wires that had been on a long time and were way to long. then almost filled up with 93 octane and it is so much better. i am going to order the oem plug wires and run good injector cleaner in the tank.
