There's two ways to route the belt... short vs long. Belt lengths from AdvanceAutoParts
Your picture shows you are using the longer 88 routing. The 89-92 use the "short" routing with a 94.5" belt. Try installing using the later method. You might have interference between the tensioner and the AC-waterpump leg. But, the belt shouldn't be too short. In fact, without the length down and around the air pump, it is probably too long now.
98.03" = Air - crank - water pump - power steering (88), or...
94.50" = Air - water pump - crank - power steering (89-92) as see in the previous pictures.
Thank to SEThirdGen for the diagrams (88 vs 89-92):
Thanks MoJoe...appreciate the prompt reply..will give it another try.
My update:
Just went out and routed it according to the 89-92 pattern, the 945K6 belt won't work, just too long. From my measurements using a nylon strap 83.50" would be full idler extension.
83.5" would be tight but 84.50" would create the best alternator to A/C (via idler) clearance.
If that doesn't work, you could try the longer belt/routing. Reading the link you had, the 98" will be too long without the air pulley, and the 96.8" (968K6) belt should work (in the '88 routing pattern).
Tried others but I am going to use belt # 965K6...shortest one that will fit..Thanks for jumping in MoJoe...went with the 1988 routing. On to repinning the ecm....
Thanks! Didn't realize there were 2 different routing patterns! Got the new belt routed, part number 980k6! Fit perfect. Water pump pulley is from caprice, bout 1/8 inch smaller in diameter than the 92 camaro and I may have the larger a/c bypass pulley! All in all nice fit. Now to solder some wires on the alternator plug to make it long enuf, unless you guys have a better idea!!
