spun beering

I believe that is what my mechanic said. The picture show what he pulled from the 1st cylinder. He is recommending that I replace the crankshaft while he is under there. I have the 5.0 TPI from an 87 Camaro Iroc Z

I would like to just replace all the beerings and leave the crank alone. I know replace the crank is a huge job and I plan on rebuilding the whole engine next winter.

He does not see anything wrong with the crank, just as a precaution. He is a friend and I am not really paying him much to do all this. I am not going to be driving the car long distances over the summer. Max would be 150 miles in a day.

Re: spun beering

Hi dad24doys. It won't work. It will spin again or something worse might happen next time. Chances are there are more worn parts that are waiting for that hard throttle run to come a flyin' out. Just put a crank kit in and know it will hold together.

Re: spun beering

That's DESTROYED.

The rod is almost certainly also ruined. If so, replacing just the crank and bearings won't last; it'll just IMMEDIATELY grenade again.

Meanwhile, the metal shavings that were generated by the failure you have now, are now all up in all the oil passages; and since they only have ONE PLACE to go from there, which is RIGHT DIRECTLY INTO your brand-new bearings, that as well will guarantee instant destruction of new stuff unless the motor is torn down and a rifle brush or the like run through all the passages.

In short, the motor is done.

I'd recommend advancing your "next winter" plan to "this spring".

In any case, DO NOT spend even ONE DIME on a 305 short block. It is MONEY DOWN THE DRAIN. Heads, yes; cam, sure; intake, maybe; but short block? Not NO, but HELL NO. All that will do, is delay your getting what you REALLY want, and force you to suffer with an expensive disappointment for EVEN LONGER.

Thank you to both. I am going to pull the engine and do a full rebuild.

Re: spun beering

Don't do that.

Do a full rebuild to SOME OTHER short block. See the post you quoted.

Why? I want to keep the same engine in the car. I go and spend 500 on an engine, how do I know it is not in the same condition?

From what I can see, my cylinder walls are in very good shape and I have very good compression
