Vortec tpi. Long crank to start

Just got this vortec 5.7 engine installed in an 89 GTA. Used the vortec conversion intake and installed hooker 2055 headers at the same time. Timing set to 6° Advanced (with timing connector unplugged). Coolant temp sensor is new. No vac leaks.

Runs good and smooth. Engine smells rich. Although I likely haven't had it running long enough to go into closed loop.

At this point it takes a couple seconds of cranking before it starts. And seems to lightly stumble before it revs up and smooths out. This is when cold. No misfiring or surging.

Any ideas as to the lengthy cranking time? Or is this normal? I'm not familiar with these cars.

Thanks.

Always curious where these threads end up. My 89 is still like this and I've done just about everything.

What is your fuel pressure? How long does it take for the pump to pressurize the system. Also look for any fuel leaks around the injectors

When you turn your key to "run", does the fuel pump run for about two seconds then shut off? If it does then your fuel pump relay is ok. I would then do what Midias suggested. Is your fuel pressure correct? How old are your injectors? Did you ohm them? Good luck.

Fuel pump does prime. Key on, fuel pressure primes to over 30psi quickly. Engine running, vacuum disconnected, fuel pressure is 38psi.

Pinch off the fuel return line going back to the tank. What is your fuel pressure now with the engine running?

With the 89 ecm programming it's normal to have a few seconds of cranking before a start.
The ecm must see 8drp above 400rpm before it enables injector pulse.
The enable can be changed in reprogramming bye adding a value for fueling at the lower pulse numbers.
