L98 pinging in fourth gear

I have noticed recently that when I'm in overdrive my engine will ping once it reaches 4th gear. It runs perfectly fine but once my RPM's drop because it goes into 4th it pings like crazy. If I step on it and bring the RPM's back up it stops. I almost always use premium fuel and sometimes regular. But even when I use premium it still pings. If anyone can help that would be great thanks.

Re: L98 pinging in fourth gear

IF the base timing is not to far advanced 6dbtdc with the est disconnected. This sounds like you may have a egr related issue. Egr stuck closed or vacuum line or solenoid issue.

Thanks for the info. I will take a look at it and see if it is near 6dbtdc and if not I'm going to have to track down the problem

Or plugged or partially plugged EGR passages.

Could also be carbon build up in the combustion chambers, knock sensor, EST module, etc.

Do you think if I removed the EGR it would get rid of the problem or would it make it worse

During cruising speeds light load the egr is commanded on. Timing is advanced when the Combustion chamber is being cooled.
If the egr is non operational removing it will not solve the problem.
This could be a result of a lean condition faulty injectors or low fuel pressure.

Ok thanks for giving me a heads up on that because I was thinking about removing it but now that you have told me I won't
