I have a V-Belt 305, How Easy Would it Be to Swap to a Reman L31?
I was leaning towards doing a swap to a crate engine from Summit Racing built to 87-95 C1500 specs. The motor has a flat tappet cam. The motor is one piece RMS and has a flat tappet cam. However, I recently saw that First Marine Automotive is selling reman L31 engines designed for a 96-2000 chevy truck. I have a 1986 IROC with the original factory LB9. The engine has Vortec heads and a roller cam.
I know to use the TPI with the Vortec heads, I need the Vortec TPI base, both engines I will need a new knock sensor and PROM and of course bigger injectors. Could I use my V-belt on the Vortec engine? Most of my accessories are new. My water pump is less than 3 years old, my Alternator and power steering pump are less than two years old. The AC compressor is the only original part and will get replaced.
My car already has a full hooker exhaust system (headers, Y-pipe and muffler), transmission and rear end have been rebuilt. I've also done all of the cheap TPI supporting mods such as making the ram air less restrictive by cutting the holes where the air filter goes and using HVAC pipe, I have an air foil on the throttle body and have done the bypass.
I know people will tell me to get a more expensive ZZ4 or an LSX instead but I just need a reliable engine to daily drive this car for the next few years. I think a rebuilt L31 is the best engine for the job. I don't need a 350 horsepower engine.
