Fuel sending Unit 88 5.7 IROC
Fuel sending Unit 88 5.7 IROC
Hey guys,
Haven't been on in a while. Married, kids, you know the drill.
Am trying to get my original IROC up and running. Been stored in a dry, air conditioned garage for years. Cranks fine, but no fuel. Am gonna do the fuel pump, fuel filter and sending unit. All the sites i can find a sending unit have different units depending on the harness code. They ask if i have an FPL or an FPH. How do i know which one i have so i can order the right part?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Fuel sending Unit 88 5.7 IROC
FPH is what you want, if you check out rockauto they will only list a few sending units for the 5.7 TPI and they all have the code FPH. Not much selection out there for sending units, Spectra seems like the best option and is half the price of the parts stores IIRC. I also saw somewhere OER is making a replacement but have no clue on the quality of that.

Re: Fuel sending Unit 88 5.7 IROC
Your sending unit is probably fine. What year is your car and is the current fuel system stock?
Re: Fuel sending Unit 88 5.7 IROC
Car is an 88. Everything on the car is bone stock. I figured i would replace the sending unit since the car has sat for a long time. I also am replacing the fuel pump. ALso, i will replace the fuel pump relay and check the fuse by the battery just in case before i start tearing into the car. Any other thoughts, insight? Super appreciated guys.
This is a special car to me, i've owned it since 89. Enjoyed the hell out of it and want to get it running again. It's in great condition with every power option, including antenna, with t tops. Thanks
Also, while i have to remove the tank to get to the pump i figured no better time than then to replace the sending unit....

Re: Fuel sending Unit 88 5.7 IROC
I second spectra. However if any gas sat in the tank than you will need to clean that out, which is not easy. Might be cheaper to buy a new tank. I wouldn't just start swapping parts first. Fuel pump and filter should be all you need. If the car ran before you parked it, I doubt the relay would go on you.
Re: Fuel sending Unit 88 5.7 IROC
Thanks
Yes, the car ran when i parked it. Ran very well. I put a few gallons of fresh gas in it recently. UGh, will try to get it out. A friend is going to help me with the job. Will keep you all posted. Thanks so much for the insight.
So is the consensus it wouldn't be the fuel injectors? I was thinking of doing them as well. Big job, but am grasping at straws here.
THanks again

Shifty also has a point on the old tank, if its in nice shape you might be able to find a shop to properly clean the inside but depending on how long it sat and moisture in there it could be ruined, your climate controlled storage may have helped here.

Be sure to get a quality pump also considering the labor involved, IIRC you can still get OE GM replacement but many ppl also seem to like the Bosch as well.
Re: Fuel sending Unit 88 5.7 IROC
These are the injectors i got. Just in case. Do i need to to do any adjusting with these? I was told they'd go right in and are factory replacement items.
Thanks
Car been sitting for 7 years. Like i said air conditioned garage, and the gas smelled decent. I also am 99% sure i put stabil in the tank before parking it.

Re: Fuel sending Unit 88 5.7 IROC
NAPA stuff is generally good quality in my experience, the sock was a good call as well.
I see those injectors are Bosch but I don't know which model, I would post a new thread asking for opinions/what they are, there are a few ppl here who are experts with injectors who could give you good info on them. I have heard some ppl have had bad luck with ebay injectors but those seem highly rated. They are labor intensive so you want to make sure they are the right ones.

Very much appreciate your help in this thread. I have put a separate post regarding the injectors. I will let all know how this all goes, but nonetheless wanted to thank all who replied here. Appreciate it.

Re: Fuel sending Unit 88 5.7 IROC
well guys, checked the fuses for fuel pump and they were changed with new fuses. I was hoping the car not starting may have been something stupid like a fuse. It was worth a try before having to drop tank, etc..
No dice....turns over fine but no start.....
So is there anything else easy/dumb for me to do before dropping the tank to do the sending unit, fuel pump, fuel filter?
Thanks so much. The replies have been helpful.

Did you check for power at the pump? If your good there and the pump won't turn on, well...get to work. Also, when you change out your sending unit, make sure you have the little o-ring that goes on your feed line connection out of the tank, or it WILL leak.

Re: Fuel sending Unit 88 5.7 IROC
Do you hear the pump prime? If not, check for voltage to pump, and if you have juice but no prime, there's your problem.
Re: Fuel sending Unit 88 5.7 IROC
If the sending unit doesn't come with the o ring, where can i get one? Anyone know what size?
ALso, should i replace the large O ring that goes on top of the tank where the sending unit mounts?
Thanks guys

Re: Fuel sending Unit 88 5.7 IROC
This is why I mentioned it. I had a spectra that didnt come with one. Didn't think anything of it. Put it together without one, and when I primed the fuel for the 1st time, it leaked, or sprayed pretty good. I googled the camaro sending units and could see it was pretty hit or miss on the ones that had them. I went to advanced auto and picked up a fuel line o ring kit. It had both sizes for feed line and return. 2 of each in package. Make sure you get one for the feed line size, and its made for gasoline. The big o ring for the top of the tank should come with all of them. If not, get one for sure. Hope this helps!
