Getting a tuned port injection setup for $200
Ok guys, i have a 91 TBI 305, I have a friend that has a used set-up off a 89 305 IROC with the mass air flow sensor. Is $200 bux good for a used MAF set-up. Would you recomend the MAF or a tuned port injection set-up without it?? any help would be awsome, i dont want the MAF system if it is no good.
Please someone help out, i dont want to spend another $200 and regret it......
Thanx so much

If he's including the ecm and the wiring harness and related sensors i say thats a damn good deal. However, for the sake of longetivity down the road, if you can talk him down and just get the intake setup (plenum, base, runners, rails, injectors)w/o electronics, i'd opt for that. Most people prefer the later speed density systems w/o the MAF(the MAF sensor is a performance restriction). You should be able to find a speed density ECM and wiring harness off ebay or a local boneyard without too much trouble. do it once do it right...........

That's a very good deal
Even if it was just intake, plenum, runners, and TB... still a pretty good deal. I just sold a lower intake for 88$, to give you some idea.
If it comes with all the sensors and harness even better. I've seen them go or 350-500 on ebay.

and up goes the BS flag....
Jettaboy,
How about 86'? Isn't that the year that TPI f-bodies switched over to SD? Or maybe 76'?? Those are both wrong, along with your 88' comment. The switch to Speed density measurement did not occur until 1990. Do some more research before you go throwing someone else off the path.
I would also love to know how a MAF setup is going to be a "performace restriction" on a 305, or a 350 with a LTR setup for that matter. Without going into a long post on the flow characteristics, a maf sensor does not become a airflow restriction unless you are using a motor with or upwards of 383 cid and/or using a different style intake.

ES has it correct.
For $200, just buy the damned thing...you can put it in the corner of the garage and stare at it for a couple of years, get too busy to install it, then double your money on Ebay
If you plan on swappping it to a SD setup, then besides the ECM, you'll need a SD harness different knock sensor and a MAP sensor, or maybe have your harness re-pinned, or swap to one of the after market EFI controllers...they'll make use of your existing harness and either work with your ECM, or replace it.
If it were me, and the MAF sensor was good, I'd install and run it as is.

1990 is the first year. If you go to do a speed density swap, look up the ECM interchange guide here. You can get a ecm from a 2.8-3.1 Liter. It will be a 7730 ecm. Then you just buy a chip, I think there like $30 new at GM. Keep your MAP sensor from the TBI you have. You will want to add a Vehicle Speed Sensor. Painless Wiring number, 60116 worked good for me. You can order that at any Autozone, by giving them the part number. Get the MAF sensor, and sell it on Ebay. Just my .02
