Start/ idle issue
Start/ idle issue
Hello all , first post here. Ever time I searched the web I ended up here lol so I decided to sign up. I done a lot of searching and didn’t find anything of much value so figured I’d post. I have a 87 gta with a 5.7 tpi can was running great yesterday and today I went to start it and it just starts and immediately dies eventually it doesn’t even try to run. If I hold the gas a little it will start right up and after I hold the idle for a while it will run on its own . Hot or cold doesn’t matter , seems to not lack power when I drive it but it will randomly stall in neutral. I can smell gas while I crank it a a bit , I am struggling to understand why it starts with a bit of throttle? Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks all

Re: Start/ idle issue
Any check engine lights? Sure sounds like leaky fuel injectors or maybe bad fuel pressure regulator. 3 things that are really useful with these cars is a factory service manual, a fuel pressure gauge and a scan tool to get live data. When my injectors were bad the car would start fine cold but warm/hot you had to open the throttle to initiate the clear flood and it would give a smoky start up.

I guess I should mention just in case I did swap a section of the line that goes from the tank to the charcoal canister to get it away from the headers as there was much space between the frame and header. The line I put on was 5/32 and a little smaller than what was there, that wouldn’t cause any issues would it?
Re: Start/ idle issue
Well after digging around with various things out the iac valve was stuck shut. I did purchase a fuel pressure gauge and looks around 43 psi and high 30’s when idling which I assume is normal. In any case the car runs great again. Thanks for the help guys.

Fuel pressure sounds about right, glad you found the problem. Might be worth doing a deep clean on the throttle body if the IAC valve was stuck shut if it was full of carbon.
Re: Start/ idle issue
Yes sir , did that while it was off . Car was sitting for about 10 years before I got it a while ago and I am surprised this is the only real problem I had since getting it running a couple months ago. I expect more gremlins to pop up the more I use it. Thanks for the advice
