Hot cam worth it?
Hi guys, I have to replace the lower intake gasket on my tpi and I’m thinking while I’m there maybe a new cam? Lt4 hot cam or the comp cam cc503? I’m just wondering if it’s really going to make an huge difference. I was told by the guys at AFR that “I’m not leaving much on the table” Here’s the thread with my specs. Looking at the specs on the other cams they look quite a bit different. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech-general-engine/782349-tpi-355-expectations.html

Re: Hot cam worth it?
I have a zz430 w a pro flo xt EFI setup. It has the lt4 hot cam. I don't think it would be an ideal match for a TPI. I was under the assumption the TPI builds more torque/hp lower than that cam would. I haven't driven a tpi car in years so I'm not the best to comment on them but the hot cam likes higher rpm's. Not saying it won't work but there may be better cams for a TPI.

Re: Hot cam worth it?
If you didn't have the AFR heads, SLP runners and the improved exhaust, I'd probably say it's flat-out not worth it.
Your current cam is 210@.050
The hot cam is 218@.050
The CC503 cam is 224@.050
The AFR guy probably has a point though... Your current cam will probably run all the way up to where the TPI starts to choke the engine off, despite the better heads and exhaust. You may get a little mid-range boost with the hot cam, but would it be worth the effort and the resulting drop in idle quality? Not really sure it would. As was said earlier, when the hot cam really wants to run, the TPI manifold probably won't let it.
If it were me, I'd probably just leave the current cam I have in it.

Re: Hot cam worth it?
The AFR guys said that you're not leaving much on the table? Weird response. I wouldn't run either of those cams with Tuned Port Injection, and if you're not familiar with how to calculate a cam's profile to see if it will work well or not with your setup, then I would recommend a Lingenfelter cam specifically designed for TPI over the hot cam. They (Lingenfelter) already did all the testing for it back in the day, and they work very well with Tuned Port Injection...

Wow, thanks so much for the responses! I really appreciate it. I think I will reach out to Lingenfelter, just see what they say. Thanks again guys, helpful as always.
