IAC -- Different procedures

Going to install my 3rd IAC on my 1989 trans am. But before I do, i looked up the procedure that needs to be done after installing it. There are many procedures, all different. Like turn the key on for 20 seconds, jump A and B pins, start the car for 5 seconds, make sure the pintal is only 1 1/8" from the base of the IAC, etc. These are just a few random procedures I picked out of multiple instructions. The last IAC that I removed was for some reason really difficult to remove. It took me an hour just to get it unscrewed using vice grips. No, it was not cross threaded. Of course the plastic on it broke. The fitting nut on the IAC is so big that you can't get a wrench on it due to tight space. Anyhow, is there a set up procedure that I can use that will work with my new IAC?

Re: IAC -- Different procedures

7226 otc Work well to install a iac, engine warm jumper the aldl a to b engine off . Wait 5 seconds disconnect the est and iac. Start the car ad adjust the minimum idle speed then tps. Or the easiest is use a scanner and watch iac steps. Engine warm 20-25 steps/counts .

Thanks for the reply. I am confused as what is a 7226 and est. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
1 install the iac
2 warm engin
3 shut off engine
4 jump a&b
5 wait 5 seconds
6 Start car
7 adjust idle speed then tps ( how do adjust the tps)

Re: IAC -- Different procedures

Adam, between your steps 3 & 4, add as follows:
3a. Key On Engine Off (KOEO)
Your Step 4 is OK, but add following. With a/b jumpered, the IAC plunger will step outward. If you listen carefully you will hear it. After about 30 - 40 seconds the sound will change because the pintle has bottomed out.
Change your Step 5 to as follows:
5. Disconnect the IAC connector and timing set connector.
You Step 6 and 7 are ok.

Afterwards, shut off the motor and reconnect the IAC and timing set connector. Clear the ecm check engine light by disconnecting the battery for 10 seconds.

Hope this helps,

Fred
