well, idon't have an 87 and its not stock but, your question only asks the eng. code. so you could use a F=tpi 305,E=tbi 305 can't remember the carbed 5.0 code(H?) but, they all came with t-5

Well heres the deal, im putting my 85 305 TPI with a auto flywheel into my brothers car. His car is a 89 305 TBI T-5. His flywheel wont bolt onto my motor. The parts guy always asks me for the 8 code, i tell him F, but all he tells me it could be is G, H, and 7. The flywheel cost like 80 bucks and he has to order it, so i dont want to order the wrong one. No T-5 305's explains why I cant use the F code. Id like to order one tomorrow if i can get a responce.
Thanks, Curtis

I'm still fuzzy on this issue so don't take what I say here as gospel, but I'll give it a crack to help point you in the right direction.
I'm gonna guess that the 89 flywheel won't work because your 86 had a 2 piece rear main. Theoretically you need a flywheel for a 2 piece rear main, and a T5. So my best guess would be to snag a 82-86 flywheel for a T5 305 and go with it. Possible vin digits would be G and H. Like was said above until 87 you couldn't get an LB9 with a 5spd and the L98 was never available with a 5 spd.
So there you go, if I'm wrong I'm sure 5,000 people will jump in to prove me wrong.

further affirming what Madmax and drew said.
The problem is your trying to put a Flywheel for a 1 piece rear main crank.... Onto a 2 piece main crank. which will not work
They changed em in the 86 model year.
You've you want a vin code to wow the guy for an earlier car. It's either a G or an H...
H was the LG4, low output one.
G was the L69, High output.
I'm not the worlds biggest manual buff, but i would think that either of those flywheels would work.. they were probalby the same size... but i've been wrong before
Ask for a flywhee for an 85 TA with a Vin code H if that's what you were looking for.

I understand why it wont fit. I too cant figure out why there should be a difference, but he says that G and H are different part numbers. I guess im gonna have to make a guess.
Thanks for your help guys

Different part numbers!? Considering that they all use the same clutch & transmission/bellhousing/fork/ etc, I gotta figure that maybe the LG4 got a lighter flywheel?

I cant imagine there being any difference between the two. Both will be a 2 piece rear main seal setup, both used the same trans, and IIRC they both use the same clutch. I know the throwout bearings never changed. Only possibility is like what Jim said, weight. There were some flywheels GM used that were of a slightly different design (and weight), but both were functionally the same. I know the ones I saw that were different were used on Corvettes, not Camaros.
Just pick one. Both G and H engines were used in the F-body, the G flywheel if anything would be the lighter one. Ring gears are going to be identical since the starters are identical.

if you are installing an 85 305 (two piece rear main crank, larger bolt circle than the 86 and newer one piece rear main crank) then give him referance for an 84-85 f-car w/ the G or H 8th vin... that should get you what you want...
