88 IROC 5.7 Tuneup
Ok, time to tune the car up. I bought this sucker just a little over a week ago, just need to know everything I need to check out good while I am off work and have time. I figured I would change the oil, thermostat, check the plugs and wires, get it timed.....what else should I do while I have my weekend (Wed. and Thurs.)? If I have the money should I get a afpr put on?

cap, rotor, tranny filter and fluid, new radiator cap, air filters, rear end fluid(at least check for level). Get under and look around. You need to know things like the staus of your tranny mount, torque arm mount, u-joints. Consider a new O2 sensor(it's probably shot). Depending on milage look at your rubber brake lines for chaffing or cracking. I am A/C mechnanic, so doing these sort-of inspections come natural. You really need to "know" the condition of your car before you "use" it. This should give you a good start..... THE SHAGGY IROC

Changing your trannies filter is quite a messy task, you should plan on a considerable amount of time on clean-up alone. Transmission mantenance is one of the few things I let others do to my car. Any old shop will be able to give your tranny a simple flush for a small charge. My tranny guy, who is also an old friend, told me that if your filter actually needs changing, there is alot more wrong with your transmision thatn just a clogged filter, a flush is all he recomends for a tranny that is in working order. A pcv valve, and a fuel filter are two other things I would recomend changing durring a tune-up, neither of which are expensive and both can effect performance and millage. Cleaning the carbon build-up on your IAC motor and your throttle body bores can help your car idle smooth if that is a problem. Adjusting your IAC is another thing you might want to consider for a proper idle rpm. A TPS adjustment might help your drivability and throttle response, but do this last becasue adjusting other things can change this setting. One more thing a lot of people over look is tire pressure, which does effect your peak performance not to mention tire life. If you aren't familiar with any of the procedures I described, search this forum for more details specific to your application.
