!air! ???

I have the emissions legal hookers on this L98and the previous owner put them on and had some crappy tack welds on the AIR tubes(no nice, neat, threaded connections like stock). The headers need to be cleaned and repainted and I have an exaust leak too. I figured what a better time than now to also take off the smog stuff as well. If I do, what tricks do I need to know to keep the computer happy? Also, did you guys who have done this remove it all, or just unhook it, and remove the pump? I don't have to worry about vehicle inspections where I'm at. Give me some good advice guys!

The computer doesent care, nor does it know when you remove the AIR equipment. Its when you get to removing the EGR that you need to reprogram the ecm to disable EGR functions.

Why is it that when I removed the EGR on my last 2 Tuned Ports I had no codes and no negative results? I believe this is a myth, but if anyone has experienced any side-effects let me know. If you ground your neutral safety the computer will bypass the emissions and work fine, but I've never had to do this!

You take the wire for the neutral safety switch and you ground it... (bolt it to the floor or something). But why would you want to do that? You could possibly try to start the car in gear or some crap. I'm always against sloppy ways of getting around something like that.

The computer will defintely set a code in both MAF and SD if you remove the EGR valve. They both definitely have checking algorithms, and both are known to signal whenfailing. MAF has a temp sensor on the EGR base. SD checks for a certain vacuum change in the engine from it. SD cars in particular are known to set an EGR code intermittently w/ a perfectly good EGR system.

I'd say you got lucky. A MAT relocation will make the computer not even try to use EGR most of the time w/ a stock chip. So that would work almost.

My EGR has been disconnected, not removed which would cause a serious air leak...but disconnected from the solenoid. Never threw a code, runs much better. When I port the plenum, I'll change the valve...until then, it's disconnected.
