Who's done THIS Ram-Air setup???
For 5 years now I've had this idea for a Ram-Air setup so I wanted to ask and see who has done it and how it works and how they did it as in what they used:
This is for a TPI Firebird. Using the 85-95 T/A hood, gut some of the underhood bracing underneath where the front grills are and remove the metal screening so there is just the plastic grill on the hood. Now make a 4th gen like filter w/weather stripping that fits flush up against the hood when closed and it feeds directly into the throttle body.
This setup makes so much sense and seems like it wouldn't be that hard to do. It just barely is out of the way of the hood latch too. Who has done this? Pics? I want to do this on my planned 91 T/A project car. I know it's not really Ram-Air because of how the hood is but it would atleast be a pretty cool CAI.

Seems like you would be sucking in a LOT of water any time it rained or you washed the car...Ive head people complain of water getting in it who have just cut the metal behind it to use for cooling...Id imagine a straight scoop like that would Let all kinds of water in.....But I dunno for sure...
Well water wouldn't be a problem for me because I never drive my Firebirds in the rain and I only wash them a few times a year, I always just dust them and keep them detailed. I'd imagine there are alot of other people here who are the same way so water wouldn't really be a big concern for me anyway.....
Well, water would be a problem for a lot of other people, since they do drive in the rain occasionally, which is why you don't see many people doing ram-air mods that don't take that into account. I'm just saying this cuts down on the number of people you'll see that can say, "Yes, I've done this...".

I never have a problem, and I drive in heavy rain, and wash often
and that sits rite behind my two huge nostrils in my hood.

Man, that looks awesome. I just used a March Pulleys Mustang Scoop doesn't look to hot, but I'm planning on an ATI eventually.

There is a lengthy discussion about the water issue. A lot of it is specifically about the fourth gens, but the information should help you out.
Alex,
I did that with my '88 purple pearl metallic TA in '96 that was totalled a few years back...I've been looking for the pics for a few weeks now..they were packed in with some stuff from when I moved out of my last apt. at college, so that means they could be in 1 of 10,000,000 boxes. Never really drove the car in the rain, so it wasn't much of a problem.

Were you able to feel any improvement in hp by doing this mod?
How did you get the MAF all the way over there? Did you just splice and extend the wires?

I dont know if turbulance is any problem, it didnt give me a whole lot more power, maybe a lil bit more top end, but it did give me ALOT more throttle response, over the stock intake.
When I had to get the MAF over there I was worried, I didnt want to cut and splice, cause even changing the length of a wire will change the resistance and all that, and I know thats how it takes readings. so I looked and tugged, and pulled it out of the loom it was in, and believe it or not, the stock wire will reach to that location. Just got play with it. I think it goes under my alternator. If your gonna do this I can take better pics of it for ya.

saturn is right. It takes i forget how many feet of wire to equal 1 ohm. Its a lot.
Point is so long as all your connections are well taken care of there is little change in circuit.

Who cares about water ?
A bit of water in the intake never hurt anyone, just keep the MAF dry. I routinely spray the hose directly into my Carb
Seems like a good idea to me. Just don't expect any huge gains.
