Tranny woes...

OK, I need help. I've noticed lately that the tranny is acting strange and seems to be 'slipping'. I'm going to check the tranny fluid level tonight. What are the odds the tranny is blown?
Due to mods not currently listed in the sig (heads/cam) I'll be needing a converter soon anyway. Would it not be almost the same cost to convert over to a 6spd tranny now? (I'm assuming $1000 for auto tranny work and another $200 or so for converter).
